The Football League play-offs are in full swing, with the knockout format adding even more drama to the glorious carnage of the regular Championship, League One and League Two seasons.
The semi-final first legs get underway this weekend across all three divisions as 12 teams battle it out for promotion to the respective leagues above.
The winners of the six two-legged semi-finals will all take to the pitch at Wembley beneath its famous arch, 90 minutes – or 120 if they’re lucky – being all that separates them from glory or despair.

The finals of the Championship, League One and League Two play-offs are all being shown live on Sky Sports.

Championship final date: Sunday 29 May
League One final date: Saturday 21 May

Championship
In the second tier, Huddersfield Town and Sheffield United are two clubs fighting to return to the Premier League after relegation in recent seasons, having dropped down in 2019 and 2021 respectively.
The other two clubs who qualified are Nottingham Forest and Luton Town, the former having distinguished themselves in the FA Cup earlier this season. Luton have not played in the top division since 1992 and even dropped into non-league before steadily rising back up the ladder.
The winners of the two play-off semis – Huddersfield vs Luton and Forest vs Sheffield – will battle it out at Wembley on Sunday 29 May at 4.30pm, leaving a nearly two week gap between the semi-final second legs and the final.
League One
The League One play-offs were split much like the Championship’s: Sheffield Wednesday and Sunderland are two of the division’s most famous clubs, being joined by MK Dons and Wycombe Wanderers.
Wycombe emerged as the victors from their semi-final with MK Dons, a 2-0 first leg winning being enough to discount the Dons’ 1-0 victory in the second leg.
The Chairboys will play Sunderland at Wembley after the Wearsiders overcame Wednesday 2-1 on aggregate.
The game will take place at 3pm on Saturday 21 May.
League Two
League Two’s play-off finalists are still to be decided, with Mansfield Town, Northampton Town, Swindon Town and Port Vale in contention.
Both Mansfield and Northampton only got to the play-offs by narrow margins, the former a point ahead of Sutton United in 8th and the latter pipped to the third automatic promotion spot by Bristol Rovers on goals scored.
Port Vale and Swindon are the other semi-finalists. Swindon in particular have done well to reach this stage after ownership difficulties during the close season saw them fielding teams of inexperienced youngsters in pre-season.
The League Two play-off final will take place on Saturday 28 May at 4pm, one day before the Championship’s.
