Everton have confirmed they are helping Merseyside Police in their enquiries after two Brentford players said members of their families had been racially abused during the Bees’ 3-2 win at Goodison Park on Sunday.
After revealing that Toffees fans had let off fireworks outside the away team’s hotel the night before the match – just as they did before Everton’s 1-0 win over Chelsea on 1 May – Brentford striker Ivan Toney added: “And for the man that racially abused my family Il do everything I can to get you the punishment you deserve!”
Team-mate Rico Henry also tweeted: “I never usually speak out on things that don’t physically harm me or my family but to see my mom upset after being racially abused by a few Everton fans brought fire to my stomach!
“I will do anything for them & whatever it takes to get the small minority punished! This is not acceptable & must be investigated immediately.”
In response, Everton said they would “ensure the individual is identified and dealt with appropriately”, adding: “There is no place in football – or society – for racism.”
On the same day, two more supporters were arrested following Burnley’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham for “racially aggravated public order offences” after being ejected from the away end of the stadium.
That came after a video circulating on social media appeared to show a fan making an alleged Nazi salute. It has not been confirmed by police or the club whether the offences the two supporters were arrested for were anti-Semitic.
In a statement, Burnley said: “This is now a police investigation and, collectively, we will work with Tottenham Hotspur, Met Police and Lancs Police on this matter.”
