Manchester United 3-0 Leicester City (Rashford 25′, 56′, Sancho 61′)
It was business as usual for in-form Manchester United as they recovered well from a difficult start to comprehensively beat Leicester City 3-0.
Two goals for Marcus Rashford took his tally to 14 in the league with Bruno Fernandes producing a brace of assists himself and Jadon Sancho’s introduction in the second half really turned the tie as Brendan Rodgers’ men failed to keep up with United’s attack.
It was a disappointing 90 minutes for the Foxes who had more than a few opportunities to change the outcome in the first half but failed to carry their momentum through to the second.
Here are i‘s player ratings for both sides:
Man Utd player ratings
- David De Gea: Made two big saves to keep United’s clean sheet alive in the first half as he was kept busy by Leicester’s attack but enjoyed a much quieter second half between the sticks. 8/10
- Diogo Dalot: Helped progress the ball and his movement into central areas certainly caused a lot of problems. Missed a golden chance around the half hour mark to make it 2-0. 7/10
- Victor Lindelof: Deputised for Varane at the back and had a near faultless display alongside Martinez. Did well against Iheanacho in the first half in an admittedly difficult battle. 9/10
- Lisandro Martinez: United look a much better team with Martinez in the side and he showed why again here. Argentina international was a vocal presence at the back and exuded calm in possession. 8/10
- Luke Shaw: Another overall solid display, proving why he is now one of the most reliable full-backs in Europe. Threatened with his underlapping and overlapping runs in wide areas. Struggled to deal with Tete in the first half but had a much easier job in the second 45. 7/10
- Fred: Showed some of his weaknesses in the first half, looking uncomfortable with the ball in defensive areas. Much like Sabitzer, his display improved in the second half, producing some excellent passes, including a well-played assist for Rashford’s second. 7/10
- Marcel Sabitzer: Looked shaky on the ball in deeper areas and was pressed extensively by Leicester’s front four in the first half. Lucky to escape a dangerous challenge on Wout Faes without a red card. Recovered well to produce a strong defensive display in the second half. 7/10
- Marcus Rashford: Showing with each game that he is currently the best player in the Premier League. A constant threat for the Leicester backline with his speed and movement in behind. Finished his goals with great composure to put the game to bed before going off for Anthony Elanga. A clear player of the match. 9/10
- Bruno Fernandes: At his creative best and looked right at home in a wide right position. Produced a delicious through-ball for Rashford’s first and then linked well with Sancho for United’s third. 9/10
- Alejandro Garnacho: Had a rather quiet 45 minutes where he failed to influence proceedings. Was taken off at half-time for Sancho. 5/10
- Wout Weghorst: Had a few cracks at goal, but the Dutchman continues to show why he is a valuable cog in this United machine. A persistent presence when Leicester were in possession of the ball, working hard to win the ball back. Got his best chance late in the game from a Sancho pass but was unlucky to not convert. 7/10
- Subs: Jadon Sancho: Sancho had a hugely positive 45 minutes in the second half and was a critical extra playmaking presence for United in forward areas, took his goal well and was a threat throughout. 8/10
- Scott McTominay 6, Aaron Wan-Bissaka 6, Anthony Elanga 6, Kobbie Mainoo N/A
Leicester player ratings
- Danny Ward: Not helped with the defensive frailities in front of him but did well when called upon to deny Weghorst and Rashford, amongst others. 6/10
- Timothy Castagne: Looked far more solid on the right than his full-back partner Kristiansen. Failed to follow up on a good showing in the first half where he was largely in control of Garnacho. 6/10
- Harry Souttar: Souttar was at fault for playing Rashford onside for his opener and had moments of weakness in the game which United capitalised upon. 6/10
- Wout Faes: Gave the ball away in sloppy fashion for Rashford’s opener, failed to communicate well with his fellow defenders and could have conceded a penalty for his dangerous challenge on Fernandes, for which he saw a yellow card. 5/10
- Victor Kristiansen: A rather quiet showing from the young Dane at left-back, simply failed to contain the threats presented by Fernandes and Dalot. 5/10
- Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall: A solid but unspectacular first half where he did well to aid Leicester’s front-four with his passing but conceded far too much space behind him for United’s attackers to exploit. Taken off by Rodgers around the hour mark for Soumare. 6/10
- Nampalys Mendy: Received a harsh yellow for a late tackle on Rashford early in the second half which set the tone for his poor display after an encouraging first 45. 6/10
- Tete: Bright spark on the right and always looked like one who could make something happen for Leicester. Created two decent chances and made an effort to test De Gea a few times himself. One of the few Leicester players who did well. 7/10
- James Maddison: The Leicester No 10 kept things ticking in attack and always looked a dangerous presence on the ball, tested De Gea’s resolve to keep a clean sheet with half a dozen attempts himself whilst also doing extremely well to setup his team-mates with well-timed passes. 7/10
- Harvey Barnes: In stark contrast to Tete, Barnes showed some promising flashes but with little end product, ultimately failed to produce anything in attacking areas. 5/10
- Kelechi Iheanacho: The former Manchester City attacker proved to be a handful for United’s defence in the first half and was involved in nearly everything that they did well in attacking areas. 7/10
- Subs: Jamie Vardy 5, Youri Tielemans 5, Dennis Praet 5, Boubakary Soumaré 5
