Next Leeds manager: Ex-Ajax boss Alfred Schreuder set to replace Jesse Marsch after attending Man Utd defeat

Leeds United are poised to turn to former Ajax boss Alfred Schreuder to guide them away from relegation trouble.
Schreuder was a guest of the club for the defeat to Manchester United on Sunday and was holding talks with members of Leeds’ hierarchy on Sunday evening about taking over.

The 50-year-old is highly experienced and has previously worked as an assistant to Erik ten Hag and Ronald Koeman but was fired by Ajax a fortnight ago with the team struggling and reports of dissent among the squad.

He is understood to be a strong contender for the job and could be in place before the crucial relegation six-pointer at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Given his failure at Ajax, it represents a risk but the club know that interim boss Michael Skubala, for all that his work this week has been impressive, is not a viable candidate with the stakes so high.

i understands that the club are considering an appointment until the end of the season, when they could take stock of the situation again.

They have been rebuffed in their attempts to attract Andoni Iraola, the Rayo Vallecano manager, and Feyenoord’s Arne Slot.

Argentinian Marcelo Gallardo, highly admired by Orta, is currently taking a sabbatical but will be available at the end of the season.

CEO Angus Kinnear wrote in his programme notes before the game that the process was “advanced”.

“The task is being able to align our list of prospects – which has been built and evolved over many seasons – with current availability and the openness of candidates to accept a new role in mid-season,” he wrote.
