Premier League title challengers Arsenal will soon return to European action with both legs of the Europa League last 16 scheduled to take place in March.
The Gunners have had an extended break from continental football after topping their group ahead of PSV, allowing them to swerve the play-off round which pitted Europa League group runners-up against clubs that finished third in the Champions League equivalent.
That three-month break has certainly been beneficial to Arsenal‘s Premier League title bid by allowing them to concentrate fully on domestic matters and it will be interesting to see how Mikel Arteta is able to juggle the club’s aspirations in both competitions moving forward.
Winning a first league title since 2004 is undoubtedly Arsenal’s principal aim for the campaign, but lifting the Europa League would also be welcome given the club hasn’t won a European trophy since the Cup Winners’ Cup back in 1994.
Courtesy of finishing top of their group, Arsenal are seeded for the draw meaning that they will avoid facing any of the other seven group winners: Real Betis, Fenerbahce, Ferencvaros, Feyenoord, Freiburg, Real Sociedad and Union Saint-Gilloise.
Arsenal will also have the benefit of playing the second leg at the Emirates which could come in handy given the presence of a few European giants in the unseeded section of the draw.
Barcelona could be potential opponents if they are able to get past Manchester United, although Erik ten Hag’s side cannot be drawn against Arsenal as teams from the same national association are kept apart until the quarter-finals.
United earned a credible first-leg result in the Nou Camp with Marcus Rashford and a Jules Kounde own goal putting them 2-1 up before former Leeds winger Raphinha salvaged a 2-2 draw for the hosts.
Other notable Champions League dropouts include Ajax, Juventus and the competition’s most successful ever club Sevilla.
The matches will be played on Thursday 9 March and Thursday 16 March.
