Ivan Toney has been called up to the England squad for Euro 2024 qualifiers against Italy and Ukraine despite recently admitting to multiple breaches of the FA’s gambling rules.
The Brentford striker was left out of Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad after initial charges against him were revealed and is expected to face a lengthy ban from football.
Nevertheless, the 27-year-old has been rewarded with a call-up after netting 16 goals in the Premier League this season and could win a first cap when the Three Lions travel to Naples and then host Ukraine later this month.
Kyle Walker, who has also been shrouded in controversy recently after being accused of exposing himself on a night out, also keeps his place.
And Harry Maguire, who has only started 10 games for Manchester United all season, five of those since the World Cup in December, was also named in a familiar-looking 25-man Southgate squad.
United team-mate Jadon Sancho, only recently back in action since taking a leave of absence from the game, is omitted while Kalvin Phillips, who has started two cup and no Premier League games for Manchester City this season, is a surprise inclusion.
And the biggest name among players left out by Southgate is Chelsea striker Raheem Sterling, who scored for his club in last week’s Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund.
It is believed Sterling has an injury issue and he is one of five players on duty in Qatar not named in this squad alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold, Conor Coady, Callum Wilson and Ben White.
