Former England captain Steven Gerrard will join Channel 4 for its coverage of England’s Euro 2024 qualifying matches alongside Jill Scott and Joe Cole.
All eight games of the Three Lions’ qualifiers will feature Scott and Cole, with Gerrard teaming up with the duo for the upcoming fixtures against Italy on Thursday (23 March) and Ukraine on Sunday (26 March). Between them the trio have 331 England caps spanning from 2000 to 2022, when the women lifted the Euros trophy against Germany in Wembley.
Jules Breach will lead the presenting line-up, Steve Bower will provide the commentary and Kelly Somers will be reporting from pitchside for both of the opening fixtures.
Coverage of the game against Italy begins at 7pm with kick-off scheduled for 7.45pm. The England squad will then return for their first home qualifier with coverage starting an hour earlier than the 5pm kick-off versus Ukraine.
Channel 4 has secured the rights to cover all of England’s Uefa 2024 Euro qualifying matches and two friendlies to be played this year. It also has the rights to four England matches in 2024 (Euro qualifiers or friendlies depending qualification).
It is a “crucial opening match” as Channel 4 stated and having heavily experienced former England players will allow the audience to understand “exactly the kind of pressure Harry Kane and the team will be under”.
Gareth Southgate remains on the mission to win England’s first tournament since the 1966 World Cup. They have come close on many occasions playing in the 2018 World Cup semi-final and the Euro 2020 final, which they lost to Italy on penalties.
Most recently England exited the 2022 World Cup in the quarter-final, losing to France following a miss from the penalty spot by Kane, who converted one earlier in the match.
