Fantasy Premier League tips: The best 15-player Bench Boost squad for Double Gameweek 29

The biggest double gameweek of the 2022-23 Fantasy Premier League season is almost upon us, with 12 clubs scheduled to play twice in Gameweek 29.

FPL managers who have patiently held onto their Bench Boost chip have been waiting for a schedule just like this. With a number of popular clubs playing twice, including Brighton, Chelsea, Manchester United and Newcastle, most bosses should be able to field a squad packed full of doublers to maximise the points potential of their subs benches.

Those who have already deployed their Bench Boost may be tempted to use the Free Hit instead to not only target the aforementioned clubs above, but also take a punt on one or two players from others with good fixtures, such as Bournemouth, Leicester and West Ham. Ideally, you should hold off using it until the blank Gameweek 32, though, as neither Brighton, Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United will be in action due to the FA Cup semi-finals.

One of the dozen clubs doubling up that we have so far neglected to mention is Liverpool, due to their patchy form and tricky set of games. Liverpool face Manchester City and Chelsea away from Anfield, which could be problematic given they have taken fewer points on their travels than 20th placed Southampton. As such, no Liverpool players make it into our 15-man squad; a decision that would have been unthinkable in previous campaigns.

Gameweek 28 top scorers

Goalkeepers:

  • Martinez (Aston Villa) – 7
  • Ramsdale (Arsenal), Neto (Bournemouth) – 3

Defenders:

  • Mings (Aston Villa) – 12
  • Kristensen (Leeds), Porro (Spurs) – 7

Midfielders:

  • Saka (Arsenal) – 18
  • Doucoure (Everton) – 13
  • Douglas Luiz (Aston Villa), Walcott (Southampton) – 11
  • Jensen (Brentford), Ward-Prowse (Southampton) – 10

Forwards:

  • Isak (Newcastle) – 13
  • Adams (Southampton) – 9
  • Havertz (Chelsea), Felix (Chelsea), Cunha (Wolves) – 8

Although each one of our selected players have two matches this week, there are some great single gameweek options too. Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Martinelli could all score highly when Arsenal host Leeds, the record-breaking Harry Kane could inspire Spurs to a new manager bounce (sort of) against Everton, while Erling Haaland can punish his sellers if he is passed fit to face Liverpool.

Here are the players to consider with your transfers ahead of the Saturday morning deadline:

Goalkeepers

Kepa Arrizabalaga (Chelsea)

Chelsea shot themselves in the foot against Everton in their last game, conceding twice at home to the joint-lowest scoring side in the Premier League. Prior to that setback, though, Kepa Arrizabalaga had kept clean sheets in three of his last four league home matches which bodes well ahead of Chelsea’s consecutive matches at Stamford Bridge. Kepa, along with Spanish compatriot David Raya (£4.9m) of Brentford, is the top-scoring keeper in FPL since the World Cup.

Price: £4.7m Points: 88 Gameweek 29 fixture(s): Aston Villa (h), Liverpool (h)

Neto (Bournemouth)

Exactly two-thirds of Bournemouth’s points this season have been earned at home and if they are to avoid a swift return to the Championship, they will have to turn the Vitality into a fortress. Both of the Cherries’ next two matches are in front of their own fans where Neto has averaged 4.5 points per game and kept three of his four clean sheets. Jason Steele (£3.9m) is a cheaper alternative, although uses up a precious Brighton slot.

Price: £4.5m Points: 60 Gameweek 29 fixture(s): Fulham (h), Brighton (h)

Double gameweek teams in full:

  • Aston Villa: Chelsea (a), Leicester (a)
  • Bournemouth: Fulham (h), Brighton (h)
  • Brighton: Brentford (h), Bournemouth (a)
  • Brentford: Brighton (a), Man Utd (a)
  • Chelsea: Aston Villa (h), Liverpool (h)
  • Leeds: Arsenal (a), Nottingham Forest (h)
  • Leicester: Crystal Palace (a), Aston Villa (h)
  • Liverpool: Man City (a), Chelsea (a)
  • Man Utd: Newcastle (a), Brentford (h)
  • Newcastle: Man Utd (h), West Ham (a)
  • Nottingham Forest: Wolves (h), Leeds (a)
  • West Ham: Southampton (h), Newcastle (h)

Defenders:

Kieran Trippier (Newcastle)

After a run of eight consecutive games with either a defensive or attacking return (or even both), Kieran Trippier has since provided just one assist and no clean sheets in his previous six. Although that form may seem alarming, the England right-back’s underlying numbers remain strong: Trent Alexander-Arnold is the only defender to create more chances than Trippier over the past six gameweeks, with 15 to 14.

Price: £6.1m Points: 154 Gameweek 29 fixture(s): Man Utd (h), West Ham (a)

Luke Shaw (Man Utd)

Gareth Southgate may have planned on rotating his left-backs for the Euro 2024 qualifiers anyway, but Luke Shaw’s late red card against Italy made his mind up for him; the United defender should be well rested after missing Sunday’s win over Ukraine through suspension. Shaw is the top-scoring defender in FPL since the World Cup, combining one goal and two assists with six clean sheets in 12 appearances.

Price: £5.2m Points: 94 Gameweek 29 fixture(s): Newcastle (a), Brentford (h)

Ben Chilwell (Chelsea)

Ben Chilwell seems to have put his injury nightmare behind him by starting in Chelsea’s last seven matches in all competitions as well as in England’s second Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine. He is becoming an increasingly creative presence in Graham Potter’s side too, supplying 10 chances and notably taking 21 corners in his last five league games. With ongoing doubts over Reece James’ fitness, Chilwell is now Chelsea’s go-to defender in FPL.

Price: £6.0 Points: 56 Gameweek 29 fixture(s): Aston Villa (h), Liverpool (h)

Pervis Estupinan (Brighton)

Pervis Estupinan’s owners have got themselves worked up over Ecuador’s double-header down under during the international break. The Brighton full-back played 90 minutes of his country’s first game against Australia and may be feeling a touch jet-lagged when he returns to the UK. Brighton’s fixtures are great, though, and despite the risks over his fitness, Estupinan is by far their best defensive option, creating four times as many chances as any other defender.

Price: £4.8 Points: 79 Gameweek 29 fixture(s): Brentford (h), Bournemouth (a)

Fabian Schar (Newcastle)

Newcastle’s clean sheets have dried up of late – they haven’t kept any in their last six games – and Eddie Howe will be expecting his team to tighten up as they push for a top-four spot. The Magpies have kept the joint-most shutouts at home this season, while West Ham, their second opponents in Gameweek 29, have only scored 24 goals in 26 games. Fabian Schar offers points potential at both ends of the pitch, recording more shots than any other defender this term.

Price: £5.0m Points: 10 Gameweek 29 fixture(s): Man Utd (h), West Ham (a)

Midfielders:

Marcus Rashford (Man Utd)

Marcus Rashford’s trip to New York during England’s Euro 2024 double-header provided an unwelcome – and entirely manufactured – sideshow, even though Gareth Southgate didn’t seem too fussed about his impromptu getaway. Erik ten Hag will surely provide an update on Rashford’s condition during his pre-Newcastle press conference, and if he is given the all clear, United’s in-form No 10 becomes the most obvious captain candidate this week.

Price: £7.3m Points: 156 Gameweek 29 fixture(s): Newcastle (a), Brentford (h)

Alexis Mac Allister (Brighton)

Since being deployed in a more advanced role behind the striker in Gameweek 23, Alexis Mac Allister has posted some eye-popping statistics. Despite only playing five games in that time due to Brighton’s schedule (while other players in the division have played eight), he ranks third among midfielders for xG, behind only Mo Salah and Gabriel Martinelli. The Argentine’s status as first-choice penalty taker enhances his appeal over rival Brighton assets.

Price: £5.5m Points: 94 Gameweek 29 fixture(s): Brentford (h), Bournemouth (a)

Solly March (Brighton)

With matches against Brentford and Bournemouth coming up, a Brighton treble up looks attractive. Investing in the Seagulls is a good idea given they have played fewer games than any other club in the league and will, therefore, have three double gameweeks to cram in before the end of the season. Solly March just edges out Kaoru Mitoma (£5.5m) in our squad as he betters the Japan international for both shots (28-20) and chances created (22 to 11) since the World Cup.

Price: £5.1m Points: 119 Gameweek 29 fixture(s): Brentford (h), Bournemouth (a)

James Maddison (Leicester)

At long, long last, James Maddison earned his first England start during the international break and he will be eager to keep himself in Southgate’s thoughts by enjoying a strong end to the campaign. Although injuries have limited him to 20 league appearances, Maddison still ranks highly among midfielders in terms of shots (7th) and chances created (8th) across the campaign. Leicester need him to be at his best to pull clear of the dropzone…

Price: £8.2m Points: 105 Gameweek 29 fixture(s): Crystal Palace (a), Aston Villa (h)

Bruno Fernandes (Man Utd)

Bruno Fernandes hasn’t been as ruthlessly efficient as Marcus Rashford – he trails his teammate by 37 points in FPL – however, he is a bonafide double gameweek demon and currently the most-bought player ahead of the deadline. On the previous two occasions in which United have played twice in a gameweek this season, Fernandes hs returned 19 and 12 points respectively. With an ownership of less than 10 per cent, he could be a nice differential skipper.

Price: £9.6m Points: 119 Gameweek 29 fixture(s): Newcastle (a), Brentford (h)

Forwards:

Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa)

Ollie Watkins has been on a hot streak ever since Aston Villa sold Danny Ings to West Ham in January, scoring six goals and providing an assist in his last eight matches. Watkins is keeping good company at the top of the goalscoring charts over the past seven gameweeks, scoring as many goals as Haaland and Kane, while his 14 shots on target is at least two better than any other player during that period.

Price: £7.5m Points: 115 Gameweek 29 fixture(s): Chelsea (a), Leicester (a)

Kai Havertz (Chelsea)

Similarly to Rashford, Kai Havertz is currently yellow flagged on FPL after withdrawing from Germany’s squad due to an illness, but is expected to recover for Chelsea’s upcoming games. Havertz has been in decent goalscoring form of late, netting in each of his previous three matches for the Blues, including twice from the penalty spot. Joao Felix (£7.6m) is a viable alternative from Chelsea’s attack after scoring against Everton last time out.

Price: £7.6m Points: 88 Gameweek 29 fixture(s): Aston Villa (h), Liverpool (h)

Danny Ings (West Ham)

If you have money tied up in Haaland and/or own Kane, then just keep them where they are. If, however, you fancy taking a punt in attack, Danny Ings could be your man. Ings has started in each of West Ham’s last three games and showed what he is capable of with two goals and a 13-point haul against Nottingham Forest in Gameweek 25. Newcastle’s Alexander Isak (£6.7m) is an intriguing in-form alternative for the third striker slot.

Price: £6.4m Points: 78 Gameweek 29 fixture(s): Southampton (h), Newcastle (h)
