Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks has revealed he’s received zero contact from the club during his season-long loan spell at Sampdoria.
The 27-year-old sealed a move to the Serie A club at the start of the campaign and has made a major impact in the past few months, becoming a regular starter under boss Dejan Stankovic. An ankle injury delayed Winks’ Sampdoria debut until 16 January.
Winks is under contract at Spurs until June 2024, but there is every chance the London-born midfield star has played his final game for his boyhood club. He was frozen out by Antonio Conte in the summer and it seems relations between Winks and Tottenham remain somewhat strained.
“I am on loan until the end of the season, I am satisfied with this experience, but I don’t know what the future holds and I don’t want to think about it,” Winks told Gazzetta dello Sport.
“I can only focus on the next match, but I am proud to have made this choice. Nobody from Tottenham has contacted me, not even the coach. I was and am fully focusing on Samp.”
Winks has been dubbed “the washing machine” by an Italian newspaper this season for his ability to recycle and tidy up possession for Sampdoria. The club face a battle to avoid relegation in Serie A – they’re currently rock bottom, 12 points adrift of safety – but the 10-cap England international is revelling in the experience.
“I feel in debt to Sampdoria. If I had been available from the start, I would have given my all to help the team, but I don’t want to think my presence would have been fundamental,” Winks added. “This is a great team, regardless of what’s going on.
“I am sorry because the club has always supported me, on and off the pitch. It was important to solve my ankle problem. There are amazing people here, and so are the fans.
“There is a strong sense of belonging and I can only be grateful to the team. There have been many changes, but we’ve never lacked support. We will continue to fight, we can still make it.”
