The Premier League match between Watford and Chelsea on Wednesday night was suspended while medics attended to a fan suffering from a reported heart attack.
Players from both sides were asked to leave the pitch around 11 minutes into the game by referee David Coote as club physios and paramedics treated the supporter.
The game had come to a halt anyway while Watford defender Adam Masina was treated for injury.
Coote could then be seen talking to Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta as medics ran across the pitch to one of the stands holding Watford supporters.
The players left the pitch soon after.
On Amazon Prime’s coverage of the match, reporter Jo Anchor said: “It was a pretty tragic incident in the crowd. A member of the public has been having a heart attack. A medical team have been giving him CPR.
“Obviously protocol has meant that the teams have gone off. In the crowd, members of the ambulance teams and football medical staff still seem to be attending to the man who has been having CPR.”
She later added: “We were told that the news is getting more positive up in the stands. It seems that the person in question is recovering. Initially we were told that the players were going to come out in five minutes’ time and have a five-minute warm-up before then kicking off. However, because there isn’t a definitive answer what’s going on with the medical incident, the players decided they don’t want to come out and play until things are completely cleared up.”
What had happened in the game?
Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel made six changes from his side’s frustrating 1-1 draw with Manchester United on Sunday as the Blues took on Watford.
Jorginho, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Hakim Ziyech dropped to the bench in place of Saul, Mason Mount and Christian Pulisic.
Reece James was not included in the matchday squad, with Kai Havertz, Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta also named in the starting XI.
Claudio Ranieri only made one change to the starting line-up from the side which lost at Leicester, despite Watford’s mounting casualty list.
Joao Pedro was included while Cucho Hernandez took his place among the substitutes.
