Liverpool can move into the Champions League quarter-finals if they can preserve their 2-0 first-leg lead over Inter Milan, but the chance to win the trophy for the second time in three years will not be the only thing on the minds of Jurgen Klopp and his players.
The Reds are still going toe-to-toe with Manchester City in the Premier League – though City extended their lead to six points with a derby win over Manchester United. Klopp’s men are also still in the FA Cup and are hunting English football’s first major quadruple.
“It was good for us to win [the] Carabao Cup, the first competition possible for us to win,” Fabinho said on Monday ahead of the second leg at Anfield. “The way we won the cup was special for everyone. When you win one trophy, it’s normal people talking about Liverpool winning four, but I’m not thinking too much about this.
“It’s something new for us, it was the first time I played a domestic final for Liverpool and [the] first time in FA Cup quarter-finals. It’s important to be in last phase of competitions. We are Liverpool – we have to try to win everything.”
Liverpool cannot afford to be complacent otherwise the Nerazzurri will punish them; Lautaro Martinez and Edin Dzeko travel to Anfield having scored a hat-trick and a brace respectively on Friday against Salernitana in Serie A.
“If you are half-time and two up and you think you are already through, then you are already on the wrong path,” Klopp added. “The result [in the first leg] was a lot better than I expected, really tough tie and difficult game to play.”
Team news
Klopp also gave injury updates on Thiago Alcantara, Joel Matip and Roberto Firmino, all of whom took part in training on Sunday.
Thiago, who suffered a hamstring injury in the Carabao Cup final warm-up last week “should be fine”, while Joel Matip is also expected to have recovered after missing the 1-0 win over West Ham due to illness.
Uncertainty still remains over Firmino, who Klopp said may need “a few more days with proper training” after picking up a muscle injury in his goal-scoring substitute appearance in the first leg last month.
Predicted Liverpool XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Fabinho, Thiago; Salah, Jota, Diaz.
Can Liverpool win the quadruple?
English football’s first quadruple could be claimed by the Reds who came close in 1983-84, when they won the First Division, League Cup and European Cup before losing 2-0 to Brighton in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
In 2000-01 they won the FA Cup, League Cup and Uefa Cup – but came third in the Premier League.
