Manchester United have led the messages of support for Cristiano Ronaldo following the death of his baby son.
In a joint statement with partner Georgina Rodriguez on Monday evening, Ronaldo said: “It is the greatest pain that any parents can feel. Only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness.
“We would like to thank the doctors and nurses for all their expert care and support. We are all devastated at this loss and we kindly ask for privacy at this very difficult time.
“Our baby boy, you are our angel. We will always love you.”
In a tribute on the club’s Instagram page, United added: “Your pain is our pain, Cristiano. Sending love and strength to you and the family at this time.”
Liverpool fans are reportedly planning a minute’s applause in the seventh minute – to reflect Ronaldo’s shirt number – but it is unclear whether the 37-year-old will feature in the Premier League match between the two sides on Tuesday evening.
The forward has not been officially ruled out but it is thought unlikely that he will be available.
Ronaldo’s announcement came after Ralf Rangnick’s press conference on Monday, during which United’s interim manager confirmed Bruno Fernandes was available to play at Anfield after a car accident on his way to Carrington.
Raphael Varane, Fred and Scott McTominay are all ruled out.
