Gary Neville calls Manchester United ‘a disgrace’ and says work ethic against Chelsea was ’embarrassing’

Thousands of Manchester United fans missed the opening 17 minutes of their Premier League clash with Chelsea, a protest against 17 years of perceived misrule by the Glazers. Perhaps the biggest indictment of all came from Gary Neville as they finally made their way into their seats at Old Trafford. “They’ve not missed much.”

United were fortunate to go in goalless at half time, with Chelsea failing to convert their 11 attempts from the first half. In the Sky Sports studio, Roy Keane described Ralf Rangnick’s side as looking “shot to pieces”.

“I think their heads are gone, no intensity, all season they’ve given up loads of chances… there’s no surprise what we’re seeing tonight,” he added.

Neville, on commentary duties alongside Martin Tyler, was scathing throughout.

Neville’s best bits

On United’s work ethic – “They deserve to get beat because they set a really poor example to young football players around work ethic and trying hard. All the things parents and coaches and teachers teach children. This lot are getting paid a fortune and they’re walking on a football pitch – I’m embarrassed.”

On Bryan Robson – “He played in a period for 10 years in the 80s when the club didn’t win a title. [Sir Alex]. The reality is you never came to a team that he was in that worked as less as this. They always gave their all, it’s the very basic demand.”

On United’s running (or lack thereof) – “You’re not going to win a title at this moment in time with the excellence of City and Liverpool, but you can run around. He must be absolutely furious, Ralf Rangnick, with what he’s watching – or what he’s not watching. 0-0 shouldn’t con us – it is a disgrace.”

On turning to the club’s youngsters – “He must be getting to that point, Ralf Rangnick, where he thinks ‘nothing to lose’.”

On the new manager – “I hope Erik ten Hag is watching this.”
