Tino Livramento injury: Southampton defender ‘very, very down’ after serious injury in Brighton draw

Tino Livramento’s situation is “not good looking” according to Ralph Hasenhuttl after the Southampton defender was carried off on a stretcher with his leg in a protective splint during Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Brighton.

Livramento, one of Saints’ star men during a largely successful Premier League campaign, appeared to get his right boot caught when challenging Enock Mwepu for a ball midway through the first half.

It immediately became clear that he needed medical attention, with the home crowd at the Amex Stadium silenced.

The 19-year-old, who had earlier hit the post with a long-range effort, stayed on the turf during the lengthy stoppage as Southampton’s medical staff assessed the injury and gave him oxygen.

Livramento was eventually carried off on a stretcher with his leg in a protective, padded splint and received applause from all four corners of the ground.

“It’s not good looking,” said Hasenhuttl after the match. “It’s a pity to say that this is serious. We don’t know it yet, but no matter how long he is out, he will come back even stronger.

“He is very, very down, this this is understandable. I think we will definitely see him coming back even stronger.”

Brighton manager Graham Potter joined counterpart Hasenhuttl in going over to former Chelsea youth player to check on him, before he was wheeled down the tunnel.

Livramento joined Saints last summer in a £5m deal from Chelsea and was making his 32nd appearance for the south coach club.

Southampton had been trailing 1-0 at the time of the injury and found themselves two down before a trademark James Ward-Prowse free kick – his eighth goal of the season and 14th Premier League free kick of his career – cut the deficit before half time.

Ward-Prowse was then on hand to convert an Oriol Romeu assist early in the second half to level the scores.

“We gifted them two goals and we felt at half-time we were very much in the game. It’s frustrating when you give teams those sort of leads but we showed great character,” Ward-Prowse said.

“Sometimes this happens in the Premier League when you’re up good teams but we were more frustrated at ourselves. To come from behind is never easy and we did that today. We wanted to start the second half quickly and continue the momentum. Probably, on another day we would have nicked a third.”
