Ralf Rangnick is set to be appointed as the new coach of the Austrian national team, which he plans to take on alongside a consultancy role at Manchester United.
Sources close to Rangnick told i the German is still keen to work with new United boss Erik ten Hag, but given the consultancy role he is due to fulfil next season is only set to be for “a few, six maybe seven” days a month, the 63-year-old feels he can do both jobs.
Rangnick is happy to give Ten Hag “any advice needed” the source added, as he believes United made the right choice for his permanent successor in terms of the style of play they should be adopting if they want to turn their fortunes around.
The Austrian FA will meet on Friday to approve Rangnick’s appointment, with the United interim set to be confirmed as Franco Foda’s replacement. Confirmation is expected within the next 48 hours.
Rangnick is a popular figure with officials in Austria after he helped revolutionise RB Salzburg when director of football at Red Bull, overseeing the impressive development of their teams.
At the beginning of the month, the Austrian FA had to officially deny approaching Rangnick over their vacant managerial position. They are looking a new coach after Foda resigned following their 2-0 defeat to Wales earlier this month which denied Austria a spot at the World Cup in Qatar.
United are not commenting on what any new role for Rangnick will mean for his current agreement with the club.
It remains unclear how much influence he will have at the beleaguered club going forward, despite the German having significantly more experience in overseeing structural change within football teams than current director of football John Murtough and sporting director Darren Fletcher.
