Newcastle 2-1 Leicester (Guimaraes ’30 ’90+5 | Lookman ’19)
Newcastle can look forward to another season in the Premier League after a stoppage-time winner from Bruno Guimaraes pushed them 12 points clear of danger.
The Brazilian’s second goal of the contest came with virtually the last touch of the game as the midfielder’s run into the area was rewarded as he dived full length to head in a deflected cross from substitute Joe Willock.
Eddie Howe’s took advantage of Leicester’s latest horror-show attempts to defend a set piece to equalise after the visitors took an early lead through some rather more positive work at an attacking corner.
Leicester, who made eight changes from their Europa Conference League side in midweek, took the lead with a neatly-worked routine from a Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall corner.
The midfielder’s low delivery virtually along the byline was flicked on at the near post by Ayoze Perez back to the penalty spot where it was met by Ademola Lookman.
A first-time shot came through a forest of legs but should nevertheless have been saved by Martin Dubravka for the winger’s eighth goal of the campaign.
Newcastle levelled on the half-hour as VAR intervened to ensure the correct outcome. That the goal arrived from a Jonjo Shelvey corner will come as little surprise as Leicester shipped from a set-piece for a league-high 22nd time this season.
Guimaraes’ celebrations were initially cut short after the Brazilian stabbed the ball home from close range following a Dan Burn knock down when referee Jarred Gillett – not unreasonably – disallowed the effort having ruled the ball had been kicked out of Kasper Schmeichel’s hands.
The Australian was advised by VAR official Lee Mason to review his ruling which replays showed that the Leicester goalkeeper did not have control of the ball which rather was wedged between his legs when Guimaraes made his crucial contact to propel the ball over the line.
The decision was overturned and justice was duly served, the hosts 14th goal from a set-piece this term.
Lessons clearly not learned, Leicester allowed Burn another free header from a late corner, but this time went unpunished as the defender was unable to direct his effort on target.
Substitute Kelechi Iheanacho narrowly failed to bundle the ball home for Brendan Rodgers’ side before Willock’s 60-yard sprint down the left culminated in Tyneside’s new cult hero diving full stretch to head into the top corner.
