West Ham vs Burnley: Player ratings and analysis as Clarets begin life without Sean Dyche

West Ham 1-1 Burnley (Soucek ’74 | Weghorst ’33)

Burnley began the post-Sean Dyche era with a battling point in a match marred by a horror injury to Ashley Westwood.

Wout Weghort’s first-half header secured only a second away win of the season for the Clarets, moments after Westwood had been taken off on a stretcher with a suspected broken ankle.

The midfielder’s leg crumpled under him as he challenged for the ball with Nikola Vlasic, and he was treated on the pitch for nine minutes before being taken to hospital.

Weghorst gestured to the bench in support of his team-mate after scoring the goal but Maxwel Cornet then missed a penalty and the Clarets, with under-23’s coach Mike Jackson in temporary charge, were pegged back by a Tomas Soucek equaliser to remain three points behind Everton in 17th.

West Ham looked as though they were suffering another European hangover following Thursday night’s heroics in Lyon, but after Soucek struck they were only denied a winner by three fine saves from Nick Pope.

The Hammers almost went ahead after 10 minutes when Jarrod Bowen sent a curler towards the top corner which Pope superbly clawed away. Moments later Aaron Cresswell’s sweetly-struck volley was cleared off the line by James Tarkowski with Bowen unable to convert the rebound.

The Westwood injury and lengthy delay seemed to rattle West Ham as they had not fully refocused when Burnley took the lead three minutes later.

Weghorst rose above Soucek at a corner to head in the rebound after Jay Rodriguez’s effort had come back off the crossbar.

Burnley blew a golden opportunity to double their advantage at the start of nine minutes of first-half stoppage time.

Cornet brought down by Hammers keeper Lukasz Fabianski but his penalty, Burnley’s first of the season, was sliced tamely wide.

West Ham levelled after 74 minutes when Soucek bundled the ball in off his shoulder from Lanzini’s free-kick.

Pope then twice saved from Antonio and produced a stunning stop from Issa Diop’s late header to preserve a point.

Burnley: Pope 8, Lowton 6 (Roberts 61, 6), Collins 6, Tarkowski 8, Taylor 7, Cornet 6, Westwood 6 (Brownhill 30, 6), Cork 6, McNeil 6 (Vydra 79, 5), Rodriguez 6, Weghorst 7.
