Next Burnley manager odds: Rafa Benitez and Carlos Carvalhal rising contenders as Wilder rules himself out

Much has changed one week on from Burnley’s surprise sacking of long-serving manager Sean Dyche.

His interim successors – U23s manager Mike Jackson assisted by club captain Ben Mee and academy director Paul Jenkins – have steered the team to an away draw at high-flying West Ham United and a thumping 3-0 home victory over Southampton.

Those two results have lifted the club to just one point from safety, though 17th-placed Everton do have a game in hand over the Clarets.

Despite Jackson’s short-term success, he is so unfancied to be Burnley’s next permanent manager by the bookies that he is not even listed in Betfair’s top 30 candidates.

Chris Wilder

Middlesbrough manager Chris Wilder is the current bookies’ favourite, but whether he remains so after an interview he gave on Friday morning – in which he effectively ruled out an immediate switch to Turf Moor – is another matter entirely.

“I’ve always been incredibly committed [to Middlesbrough],” Wilder told BBC Radio Tees.

The former Sheffield United manager added: “I met the chairman and had a lengthy meeting with him. He understands that, if anything happens on either way there’ll be a discussion.

“Nothing has happened so there’s nothing to discuss. He knows my commitment to the football club and if you look at my past record and the length I’ve been at football clubs – I don’t just jump from job to job.”

Wilder had fuelled speculation about his future by tetchily refusing to answer questions about the links after Middlesbrough’s 2-0 home defeat to play-off rivals Huddersfield Town on Easter Monday.

It had earlier been reported that Burnley were also lining up a swoop for Middlesbrough’s direct of football, Kieran Scott.

Wayne Rooney

Despite his Derby County side being relegated to League One for the first time in three decades, Wayne Rooney’s managerial stock has risen considerably amidst the off-pitch problems that have beset his club.

After administration and a 21-point deduction, Rooney’s men battled valiantly and it is remarkable that their relegation was only confirmed this month, given the circumstances.

No wonder, then, that Roney is the second favourite for the Burnley job. He has said that he would only consider a move away from Pride Park if the proposed takeover by American businessman Chris Kirchner falls through.

“The takeover has to happen. If the takeover doesn’t happen, then I really fear for where the club will end up,” he told Sky Sports. “The club’s future is in doubt, if it doesn’t happen my future is in doubt. So it has to.”

Rafa Benitez

Former Liverpool, Newcastle and Everton manager Rafa Benitez has now risen to third favourite.

The Spaniard has mucked in at the bottom end of the Premier League with both of his previous two jobs, first at Newcastle and then at Burnley’s current relegation rivals Everton.

He was sacked in January after just six months at Goodison Park, with his side having won just once since September 2021.

Frank Lampard has been unable to reverse the club’s fortunes since his arrival, suggesting its problems went far deeper than who was in the dugout.

Following his sacking, Benitez released a statement claiming things “would have been better” if players had not been injured and more signings had been made.

Kjetil Knutsen

The only name in the top five to have no experience managing in England, Kjetil Knutsen is a manager most football supporters have only become aware of this season.

His Bodo/Glimt side, of the Norwegian top flight, reached the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League by beating Celtic, AZ Alkmaar and Jose Mourinho’s Roma – that 6-1 defeat was the biggest of Mourinho’s entire career.

Knutsen employs a high-energy, forward-minded style of play with his youthful squad. That may at first appear ill-suited to a squad built according to Dyche’s more functional preferences.

But if excitement is what Burnley want from the appointment, Knutsen will certainly provide it.

Carlos Carvalhal

Carlos Carvalhal’s status as fifth favourite may come a surprise given his record in English football.

He was in charge at Sheffield Wednesday between 2015 and 2017 – failing to win promotion – and then failed to steer Swansea City to safety in 2017-18.

Since returning to his native Portugal, Carvalhal has taken Braga to a domestic double last season and 4th place in this campaign.

Reports in the Portuguese media suggest Carvalhal will almost certainly leave the club when his contract expires in the summer. Others have reported that Burnley are interested in acquiring his services, too.
