Fantasy Premier League managers are scrambling to get Son Heung-min into their teams after the South Korean’s hat-trick during Tottenham’s 4-0 win against Aston Villa.
Spurs are rapidly becoming the go-to team on FPL thanks to the prolific form of their front three, consisting of Harry Kane, Son and Dejan Kulusevski, who rank first, second and third respectively for Premier League goals and assists over the past seven gameweeks.
That trio all feature in the top 10 most-bought players ahead of Gameweek 33, despite Spurs not being among the cluster of clubs playing twice. The seven double gameweek teams in 33 are: Arsenal, Brighton, Burnley, Leicester, Manchester United, Newcastle and Southampton.
For those in possession of a Free Hit chip, now could be a great time to use it as the teams playing twice are packed full of differential options. Conversely, you may wish to hang onto it for a while longer as single gameweek teams like Spurs, Liverpool and Manchester City, all have promising looking home matches, negating the upside of removing their players.
This week’s team features seven players from double gameweek teams and costs £82.4m.
Kasper Schmeichel (Leicester)
Rotation has been the name of the game at Leicester since Brendan Rodgers began prioritising the Europa Conference League, as evidenced last weekend when he made seven changes against Crystal Palace. Kasper Schmeichel is the one player in Rodgers’ squad who appears likely to start every game in both competitions from now until the end of the season. Schmeichel ranks 10th for FPL points among goalkeepers and is considerably cheaper than any of the nine above him in the charts.
Price: £4.8m Points: 102 Gameweek 33 fixture(s): Newcastle (a), Everton (a)
Fabian Schar (Newcastle)
Of the seven clubs playing twice in Gameweek 33, Newcastle arguably have the best combination of form and fixtures, making their low-budget players extremely attractive. Both of Newcastle’s opponents will come into the game having played physically and mentally draining fixtures a few days before – Leicester will face PSV in the Europa Conference League and Crystal Palace against Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final. That could bode well for their defenders, of whom Fabian Schar is the pick of the bunch.
Price: £4.4m Points: 76 Gameweek 33 fixture(s): Leicester (h), Crystal Palace (h)
Alex Telles (Man Utd)
Ordinarily, a double gameweek that includes Manchester United and none of Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea or Spurs, would lead to a spike in interest in their players from FPL managers. Not after that result against Everton though, a performance described as “disgraceful” by David De Gea. Nevertheless, a home game against Norwich is about as good it gets and with Luke Shaw injured, the low-owned Alex Telles could prove to be a useful differential option over the next few weeks.
Price: £5.0m Points: 47 Gameweek 33 fixture(s): Norwich (h), Liverpool (a)
Joao Cancelo (Man City)
Joao Cancelo ended a fallow run of seven games without an attacking return in Gameweek 32 by providing a superb assist for Gabriel Jesus during Sunday’s humdinger between City and Liverpool. Although Cancelo continues to comically underperform in front of goal – he has scored just once this season from 62 shots and 2.87 expected goals – he looks a great pick for the run-in given City’s favourable fixture list. Brighton caused a shock against Arsenal last weekend, but have only scored three times in their last eight games.
Price: £7.0m Points: 173 Gameweek 33 fixture: Brighton (h)
Gabriel Martinelli (Arsenal)
A slightly risky pick perhaps considering he was taken off as Arsenal chased the game against Brighton on Saturday, but Gabriel Martinelli is a cheap option with a potentially big upside. The Brazilian was a whisker away from scoring an equaliser at the weekend only for VAR to eventually rule that he was offside by a matter of millimetres. With Alexandre Lacazette struggling badly for form and confidence, there is a chance that Martinelli – listed as a midfielder in FPL – could be used as a central striker.
Price: £5.3m Points: 80 Gameweek 33 fixture(s): Southampton (a), Chelsea (a)
Son Heung-min (Spurs)
The case for tripling up on Tottenham’s attack is growing stronger with each week. Since Gameweek 26, the three top-scoring players in FPL are: Son Heung-min (81 points), Harry Kane (80) and Dejan Kulusevski (62). Owning at least two of them is essential and judging by the last few weeks, Son is the standout option having scored six goals and provided an assist in his last three games. Son has plenty to play for in the final weeks, with Spurs hunting a top-four place and Mo Salah in his sights in the Golden Boot race.
Price: £11.1m Points: 198 Gameweek 33 fixture: Brighton (h)
Bruno Fernandes (Man Utd)
Although Bruno Fernandes’ points returns have diminished sharply this season, he has saved some of his biggest hauls for double gameweeks. The Portuguese returned 23 points in Gameweek 22 by scoring twice in the first game and providing two assists in the second and supplied 12 points in Gameweek 25 after popping up with an injury-time strike in the second match against Brighton. For those using a Free Hit chip, switching Salah to Fernandes for one week could prove to be a fruitful strategy.
Price: £11.6m Points: 136 Gameweek 33 fixture(s): Norwich (h), Liverpool (a)
James Maddison (Leicester)
If it wasn’t for the Europa Conference League, James Maddison would arguably be the standout captain option among the double gameweek players this week due to his excellent recent form. Maddison has looked back to his best over the past few weeks, providing a goal or assist in four of his last five games, including his last three in a row. FPL managers have clearly been impressed by the 25-year-old’s performances as he is currently the most-bought player ahead of Saturday’s deadline.
Price: £7.0m Points: 130 Gameweek 33 fixture(s): Newcastle (a), Everton (a)
Chris Wood (Newcastle)
After failing to win any of their opening eight league games at home, Newcastle have since turned St James’ Park into a fortress, winning each of their previous four games in front of their own fans. The most recent of those victories came against Wolves last Friday, a game in which Chris Wood had a goal disallowed before winning and converting the winning penalty. While that was only Wood’s second goal in a dozen games for his new club, he is top among Newcastle’s squad for expected goals since his debut against Watford.
Price: £6.7m Points: 83 Gameweek 33 fixture(s): Leicester (h), Crystal Palace (h)
Ivan Toney (Brentford)
A run of four wins in five games – coinciding with Christian Eriksen’s integration into the side – has seen Brentford pull clear from the relegation zone and aim for a possible top-half finish. Eriksen’s influence has been key to their good form but so too has the goalscoring exploits of Ivan Toney who has scored six times in his last five games. Brentford’s next opponents Watford look all but doomed to relegation after losing their last nine games at Vicarage Road and Toney can capitalise on their home woes this weekend.
Price: £6.9m Points: 126 Gameweek 33 fixture: Watford (a)
Harry Kane (Spurs)
That Tottenham have scored 12 goals in their previous three Premier League games would be noteworthy enough in itself, let alone the fact that Harry Kane hasn’t netted any of them. Despite not scoring, Kane has been ticking along nicely by providing a remarkable seven FPL assists in his last three matches, four of which have been for his long-term ally Son. Kane will be hungry to get back on the scoresheet soon, though, and should be confident about doing so against Brighton, whom he has scored three times against this term.
Price: £12.6m Points: 150 Gameweek 33 fixture: Brighton (h)
