Fantasy Premier League gameweeks do not come much bigger than this.
Double Gameweek 36 is finally upon us with a dozen teams playing twice over the next week, including numerous clubs that have something to play for as the 2021-22 season draws to an exciting close.
Title challengers Manchester City and Liverpool are both in action twice, as are Champions League-chasing Arsenal and Spurs who will play each other at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the second fixture, and relegation-threatened pair Everton and Leeds.
Chelsea also have two games and will look to avoid being dragged back into the top-four battle after slipping to defeat at Goodison Park. And if you are prepared to take a gamble on Brendan Rodgers’ team selection, Leicester have a promising schedule with back-to-back home games against Everton and Norwich.
Double Gameweek teams in full
- Arsenal vs Leeds (h), Spurs (a)
- Aston Villa vs Burnley (a), Liverpool (h)
- Chelsea vs Wolves (h), Leeds (a)
- Everton vs Leicester (a), Watford (a)
- Leeds vs Arsenal (a), Chelsea (h)
- Leicester vs Everton (h), Norwich (h)
- Liverpool vs Tottenham (h), Aston Villa (a)
- Man City vs Newcastle (h), Wolves (a)
- Norwich vs West Ham (h), Leicester (a)
- Spurs vs Liverpool (a), Arsenal (h)
- Watford vs Crystal Palace (a), Everton (h)
- Wolves vs Chelsea (a), Man City (h)
FPL managers who have patiently held onto their chips for this long will no doubt be tempted to push the magic button this week. With plenty of teams doubling up, this is an excellent week to deploy the Bench Boost if you still have it, while those in possession of the Triple Captain may want to hand the responsibility over to Mo Salah, Son Heung-min or perhaps a Man City player, like Kevin De Bruyne.
It could be worth delaying the use of the Free Hit, though, unless you still have both available as eight of the 10 most owned players in the game, along with numerous other popular assets, have two fixtures making it hard to get the maximum benefit out of it. Next week looks like a more efficient use of the temporary wildcard when none of the top seven clubs double.
This week’s team costs just £0.1m short of the £83m weekly budget at the time of writing and could likely increase before Saturday’s deadline so move quickly if you’re short of funds!
Ben Foster (Watford)
Not only is footballer turned YouTuber Ben Foster the cheapest starting goalkeeper in FPL, but he also has two fixtures this week with Watford up against Crystal Palace and Everton. Now, considering the Hornets will imminently join Norwich back in the Championship after one season away, picking Foster or any of their players for that matter is something of a punt. Nevertheless, his bargain price allows for cash to be splashed elsewhere and who knows, maybe Watford will spring a surprise or two in Gameweek 36.
Price: £4.1m Points: 67 Gameweek 36 fixture(s): Crystal Palace (a), Everton (h)
Joao Cancelo (Man City)
Joao Cancelo’s FPL returns have undeniably slowed in 2022 with his only double-digit return so far in this calendar year coming against Chelsea in January. Nevertheless, Manchester City’s propensity to collect clean sheets has meant that he has provided steady if unspectacular returns over the past few months as shown by his fourth-place position in the FPL top-scorer charts. Pep Guardiola’s side have kept four clean sheets in their previous six league games and with a relatively straightforward run-in, Cancelo should keep on picking up six-pointers at the bare minimum.
Price: £7.2m Points: 185 Gameweek 36 fixture(s): Newcastle (h), Wolves (a)
Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)
Welcome to this week’s edition of the Trent Alexander-Arnold x Andy Robertson hokey cokey. In last week’s selections, we plumped for the latter and it was a decision that paid off with Robertson earning six points to Alexander-Arnold’s zero. But after being given a rest against Newcastle, Alexander-Arnold comes back into the team this week in the expectation that he is less prone to rotation. Although Alexander-Arnold has only provided two assists in his last 10 matches, he has been unfortunate to have not had more as he has created six “big chances” in that time.
Price: £8.4m Points: 202 Gameweek 36 fixture(s): Spurs (h), Aston Villa (a)
Marcos Alonso (Chelsea)
It is becoming increasingly tricky to predict which Chelsea side is going to turn up from one game to the next: will it be the team that pulverised Southampton 6-0 and beat Real Madrid in the Bernabeu? Or the rabble torn apart by Arsenal and beaten by Everton? A number of players have suffered a dip in form, but Marcos Alonso has arguably produced his best football of the campaign, supplying a goal and two assists across his previous five appearances.
Price: £5.7m Points: 112 Gameweek 36 fixture(s): Wolves (h), Leeds (a)
Joel Matip (Liverpool)
Liverpool’s defensive record has been exceptional of late with Jurgen Klopp’s side conceding only twice – both in the 2-2 draw against Manchester City – in their previous nine league matches. Joel Matip has started in all but one of those games and appears to have been entrusted as Virgil van Dijk’s Premier League partner, with Ibrahima Konate subbing in for Champions League duty. Pairing Alexander-Arnold with Robertson is the optimum way to double up on Liverpool’s defence, but if money is tight you could do far worse than pick Matip alongside your chosen favourite.
Price: £5.2m Points: 141 Gameweek 36 fixture(s): Spurs (h), Aston Villa (a)
Aymeric Laporte (Man City)
Liverpool and Manchester City are the best teams in the Premier League and boast the best defensive records in the Premier League. Therefore, doubling up on both defences seems like a sensible move, particularly during a gameweek in which they each play two fixtures. Aymeric Laporte has been a model of consistency at the heart of City’s defence this season and with John Stones and possibly Nathan Ake unlikely to feature in Gameweek 36 due to injury, his chances of playing in both matches look strong.
Price: £6.0m Points: 144 Gameweek 36 fixtures: Newcastle (h), Wolves (a)
Bukayo Saka (Arsenal)
Arsenal have followed up a run of three consecutive defeats against teams mired in mid-table with three successive wins against sides in the top seven to galvanise their top-four hopes. Bukayo Saka has been integral to that upturn in form, scoring penalties against Chelsea and Manchester United and providing assists against the latter and West Ham. Saka is both Arsenal’s top goalscorer (with 11 goals) and joint-top assister (eight) over the course of the campaign.
Price: £6.7m Points: 168 Gameweek 36 fixture(s): Leeds (h), Spurs (a)
Phil Foden (Man City)
Gabriel Jesus has hit a purple patch of goalscoring form and Kevin De Bruyne was given last weekend off, making them attractive attacking options for managers targeting City this week. However, Phil Foden is cheaper than both and as he demonstrated against Leeds at the weekend, well capable of supplying FPL points if handed a start. Foden provided assists for Rodri and Jesus during City’s 4-0 win against Leeds to earn his fifth-highest score of the campaign.
Price: £7.8m Points: 127 Gameweek 36 fixture(s): Newcastle (h), Wolves (a)
Mo Salah (Liverpool)
The 3.4 million managers who captained Mo Salah for Liverpool’s game against Newcastle were left cursing their luck after he was named on the bench and brought on with only 21 minutes remaining. Frustrating as that one-point cameo was, it should enhance Salah’s prospects of starting in both of Liverpool’s double gameweek fixtures this week given Jurgen Klopp very rarely affords him a rest. Salah also has a bit of work to do to secure the Golden Boot with Son Heung-min now only three behind.
Price: £13.3m Points: 256 Gameweek 36 fixture(s): Spurs (h), Aston Villa (a)
Son Heung-min (Spurs)
Tottenham were a long way from their best during Sunday’s win against Leicester, but when Son Heung-min is in this kind of form it barely matters. Son scored the all-important second goal after fine work from Dejan Kulusevski and then finished the job with a spectacular strike from distance on his “weaker” left foot. Since Gameweek 30, Son has recorded gameweek scores of 15, 12, 21 and 19 to move to within 23 points of Mo Salah at the top of the FPL leaderboard.
Price: £11.0m Points: 226 Gameweek 36 fixture(s): Liverpool (a), Arsenal (h)
Richarlison (Everton)
Richarlison’s decision to celebrate a priceless goal against Chelsea by launching a lit flare into the Gwladys Street end is one of the most iconic images of the season… but it could also get the Brazilian into hot water with the FA, who have launched an investigation into his conduct. If Richarlison avoids a ban he should feature prominently on your shopping list as he is the talisman for an Everton side that plays four times over the next two gameweeks. Since Gameweek 31, he ranks third among all forwards for FPL points (35).
Price: £7.5m Points: 99 Gameweek 36 fixture(s): Leicester (a), Watford (a)
