Manchester United players risk further angering supporters at Old Trafford on Monday night when they mark the end of their home campaign with a lap of honour.
Ralf Rangnick’s side host Brentford, still on course for their worst league season in over three decades and fans’ group “The 58” have organised a pre-match demonstration for a third straight home match.
They are also calling for fans to walk out of Old Trafford after 73 minutes – 17 before the final whistle, to represent the number of years unpopular owners the Glazer family have been in charge.
But any supporters remaining will be treated to what club officials have confirmed as a “lap of appreciation,” a gesture which may not be well received given United’s miserable campaign.
Those supporters have generally stood by the players, while reserving all their animosity towards the Glazers. The combined 10,000 supporters who demonstrated before the last two Old Trafford matches targeted the Americans.
But this season has also been notable for the way in which supporters’ patience towards their players has finally reached breaking point.
Supporters booed Paul Pogba during last week’s win over Norwich and he responded with a gesture after being substituted.
The Frenchman then limped off after less than 10 minutes of United’s next fixture – the four-goal defeat at Liverpool – with Rangnick predicting Pogba had played his last game for the club.
Captain Harry Maguire has also been targeted, and Cheshire police even called to his Wilmslow home to deal with a bomb threat, with Rangnick saying the England defender may also not play again this season due to a knee “niggle.”
And even Marcus Rashford has been criticised by supporters amid a dramatic loss of form.
At the turn of the year, a banner inside Old Trafford also criticised current players, bearing the slogan “Standards,” alongside images of club legends Eric Cantona, Roy Keane and Bryan Robson.
Rangnick revealed that Jadon Sancho’s season may also be over, due to tonsillitis.
United need to win all three remaining games to match their current lowest ever Premier League points tally, the 63 they recorded in 2013-14.
United are currently on 55 points and this campaign will represent their worst in the league since 1990-91, when they finished with 59.
