Luton Town have a shot at playing in the Premier League for the first time after qualifying for the Championship play-offs on the final day of the 2022 season.
The Hatters, who were playing non-league as recently as 2014, were last in the top flight in 1991-92 – the season before the creation of the Premier League.
Nathan Jones‘ side finished sixth in the Championship table with a 1-0 victory over Reading at Kenilworth Road on Saturday thanks to an extraordinary goal from Harry Cornick on the stroke of half-time.
The quick-thinking Luton forward sealed his 13th goal of the season after lurking behind Orjan Nyland and then nipping in and slotting home as the unwitting Reading keeper dropped the ball to the floor to make a clearance.
Luton will now meet third-placed Huddersfield Town at home for the first leg of their play-off semi-final on Friday before travelling to Yorkshire for the return leg on Monday.
Sheffield United sealed fifth place after thrashing champions Fulham 4-0 and will meet a resurgent Nottingham Forest in the other semi-final.
Morgan Gibbs-White, Iliman Ndiaye and Sander Berge all punished poor defending from Marco Silva’s off-colour champions before Enda Stevens added another for the Blades in the second half.
Four teams went into the final day with hopes of qualifying for the play-offs but Middlesbrough’s 4-1 defeat at Preston North End and Millwall’s 1-0 loss at already-promoted Bournemouth ended both those teams’ seasons early.
