England player ratings vs Germany: Maguire struggles as subs Bellingham, Bowen and Grealish shine in draw

England laboured to a 1-1 draw against Germany in the Nations League thanks to Harry Kane’s late penalty on Tuesday night.

Jonas Hofmann put Germany in front five minutes into the second half, but Kane’s 50th England goal saw the Three Lions earn a point in Munich.

We rate every England performance from the League A Group 3 game…

Pickford: Had plenty to shout about with a nervy defence in front of him, but could then only get a weak palm to Hofmann’s opener in the 50th minute. A solid hand prevented Thomas Muller from making it 2-0, though, and he then rushed out to deny Timo Werner. 6/10

More from Football

Walker: With right-back the most hotly-contested position in England’s squad, Walker did not exactly convince Southgate he warrants a start over Trent Alexander-Arnold or Reece James. Ineffective going forward, but did make amends when intercepting club teammate Ilkay Gundogan. 5/10

Maguire: Easily outmuscled by Kai Havertz in the build-up to Germany’s rightly disallowed goal for offside in the first half, and in the second half he needlessly stepped up to gift Hofmann space in-behind for his goal. 3/10

Stones: Did not make the same headline error as Maguire but did not entirely look assured himself. There will be growing calls for Southgate to reconsider this partnership, despite their efforts in the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020 runs. Fikayo Tomori, anyone? 5/10

Trippier: Sloppy early on with a back pass that went out for a corner, and only made Luke Shaw and Ben Chilwell’s absence more noticeable. 5/10

Phillips: An early collision with Nico Schlotterbeck left the Leeds midfielder requiring treatment, and though he tried to carry on he limped off moments later in the 14th minute. n/a

Rice: A poor back pass almost left Pickford short and typified the pressure Germany were putting England under. First touch let him down in the Germany box with 20 minutes remaining. 6/10

Musiala shines for Germany

i chief football correspondent Sam Cunningham in Munich

One of Germany’s best players was the one that got away for England.

Jamal Musiala was a regular for England’s youth teams, from Under 15s to Under 21s, and spent nine years in the academies of Southampton and Chelsea before the 19-year-old was persuaded to represent Germany (where he was born) after moving to Bayern Munich.

His quick feet, speed and movement in Germany’s rapid transitions between defence and attack were enough to make Southgate acutely aware of what he’s missing and to warrant resounding applause when he was substituted on 65 minutes.

Saka: Saw little of the ball in the first half but then twice went close just before the break, forcing Manuel Neuer into a save before curling an effort narrowly wide. 5/10

Mount: Took the bull by the horns after England went a goal down, trying his luck from distance before showing endeavour to get into Germany’s box before it was cleared for a corner. His departure changed the game, however, due to Grealish’s standout cameo. 6/10

Sterling: Offered little and looked as though he might go off injured late in the first half. One cross went straight out on the hour, and minutes later his cross-cum-shot trickled out for a goal kick. Fired over with 10 minutes left. 5/10

Kane: Spurned an opportunity midway through the first half when shooting wildly over, although a foul was eventually given. With 15 minutes to go he had a glorious chance to equalise, but Neuer denied him with a fine save after the Tottenham striker reached to meet Grealish’s cross. Fouled by Schlotterbeck, he then picked himself up to score from the spot and make it a half-century of goals for England. 6/10

England subs

Bellingham: Showed more intent than the majority of England’s players, evidently eager to impress in a country where he plies his trade, and forever closing down to suffocate the opposition. 7/10

Grealish: Playing his Euro 2020 role, Grealish came off the bench and immediately lifted England. His cross for Kane was perfect, and it was his through ball which took a ricochet and eventually led to England’s penalty. 7/10

Bowen: Earned a second England cap when coming on late for Saka, and thought he had an assist when a delightful low cross caused trouble in Germany’s six-yard area. 7/10
