Vincent Kompany adds ‘misunderstood’ Craig Bellamy to his coaching staff at Burnley

Vincent Kompany admits Burnley are in a “dangerous period” as he made his first major move as manager of the newly-relegated club by appointing Craig Bellamy to his coaching staff.

The former Manchester City legend replaces Sean Dyche, controversially sacked by Burnley in April, a month before relegation ended their six-year stay in the Premier League.

And after going through a similar experience, in his first managerial post with fallen Belgian giants Anderlecht, Kompany is aware of the potential financial pitfalls awaiting his new club.

“It was a conscious choice, when you get into these transitions of ownership – that’s why I stay calm, I don’t want to make big statements,” he said.

“It’s really a very delicate and dangerous period of time when you’ve got these transitions. You can fall very far down or go very quickly back up.

“Obviously my previous job I ended up the wrong side of it, we’d already gone too far down the wrong path.

“And I can see it cripples the club – there’s nothing you can do, you want to get players you can’t but you have to sell players. That’s why I rated the job I did at Anderlecht as I did – a fantastic job.

“The advantage we have right now is we are on the brink, that’s why I came here to turn a corner, then it becomes a very healthy club again.”

Kompany takes over a Burnley squad that has lost around nine of last season’s first team squad, a list headed by new Newcastle keeper Nick Pope, centre-halves James Tarkowski and Ben Mee and forwards Maxwel Cornet and Wout Weghorst, who are also expected to leave.

In response, Kompany is close to deals for defenders Dan Ballard of Arsenal and Manchester City’s C.J. Egan-Riley, with MK Dons midfielder Scott Twine another incoming, after his former City teammate Bellamy arrived at Turf Moor.

“He’s someone I have huge respect for,” said Kompany of Bellamy. “He’s incredibly gifted and he’s a typical misunderstood guy who gives so much. If I can have him with me, I will.”
