Who won Soccer Aid 2022? What the score was, how much the match raised and why Lee Mack was on the World XI

Soccer Aid went to penalties for the fourth time in five years in its 2022 edition, with the World XI taking their fourth win in a row.

The charity event was created by Robbie Williams in 2006, and has brought together celebrities and football legends from around the world ever since.

This year’s match at the London Stadium featured legends including Cafu, Joe Cole and Andriy Shevchenko alongside the likes of Lee Mack and Kem Cetinay – here’s what happened.

How much did Soccer Aid 2022 raise?

This year’s Soccer Aid even raised raise a record breaking £15,673,728 for Unicef, breaking last year’s total of £13m.

The focus for 2022 is on Ukraine and the 7.5 million children being affected by Russia’s invasion.

To help, Unicef is delivering “Blue Dot” safe spaces along refugee routes, providing medical supplies, water and mental health support.

They also aim to provide vaccines, fight malnutrition and provide safe spaces for children in times of crisis.

Who won Soccer Aid 2022?

TikTok star Noah Beck opened the scoring for the World XI from the penalty spot, after YouTuber Chunkz pushed former Manchester United left-back Patrice Evra.

Chunkz redeemed himself at the other end of the pitch when fouled by Beck, leaving no choice for referee Mark Clattenburg, who pointed to the penalty spot.

The YouTube influencer stood over the penalty but he was instructed to give it up to Mark Wright, who slotted his shot into Petr Cech’s bottom left corner to level the scoring.

England took the lead thanks to singer Tom Grennan, who calmly stroked his shot past the world’s strongest man Tom Stoltman after a blazing run through two defenders.

The 2-1 lead lasted until the 62nd minute when Wright misplaced a pass back to goalkeeper David Harewood, allowing former Love Island star Cetinay to net his fourth Soccer Aid goal.

It made him the joint top scorer in Soccer Aid history with Dutch legend Clarence Seedorf, and meant the game would be decided by penalties.

Grennan and comedian Russell Howard missed their spot-kicks, leaving the way open for Lee Mack – who had missed all his three of his Soccer Aid penalties to date – to win it for the World XI.

For the first time ever he converted from the spot past Harewood whose hand was not firm enough to stop the comedian clinching the shoot-out 4-1.

More on Soccer Aid

Why does Lee Mack play for the World XI?

Mack previously played for England, but during an appearance on “Who Do You Think You Are?” In 2018 he discovered that he is of Irish descent, therefore switching allegiances to World XI in 2021.

The 53-year-old is not the only one to be born in England but play for World XI – Mo Gilligan, for example, qualifies because of his Jamaican and St.Lucian descent, while Chelcee Grimes is Irish.
