Lucy Bronze has secured a new club just two weeks before the Women’s Euro 2022 gets underway in England after penning a two-year contract with Barcelona.
The England full-back has signed for Barcelona until the summer of 2024 and will be part of Jonatan Giraldez’s side as they seek to defend the Spanish title next term.
And she admits she couldn’t turn down the opportunity to play for such a club.
“I am very happy to play for as club like FC Barcelona, one of the biggest teams in the world. I’m really looking forward to starting work with the team,” Bronze said.
“After a couple of conversations, you can’t say no to Barca.”
Bronze is part of the England squad competing at Euro 2022 this summer. The Lionesses kick off their campaign against Austria on 6 July at Old Trafford. The Euro 2022 final is scheduled for 30 July at Wembley Stadium, seven days before Barcelona play Roma in a pre-season friendly.
Bronze, 30, was out of contract this summer after leaving Manchester City. She starred in the Women’s League Cup final win over Chelsea back in March and also helped City to Women’s FA Cup glory the previous season.
She is a three-time WSL champion, having won the title twice with Liverpool and then again during her first stint with City. But it is her European pedigree that Barcelona are likely to be most excited about.
The former Sunderland player won three successive Champions League titles with Lyon between 2018 and 2020, before moving back to City.
Bronze becomes Barca’s third defensive addition of the summer transfer window, following Nuria Rabano from Real Sociedad, while Laia Codina was given a new contract.
