The popular and pricey forwards in Fantasy Premier League have taken it in turns to deliver the points in the first couple of games and managers will be hoping that their chosen assets fire in Gameweek 3.
Big-money signings Erling Haaland and Darwin Nunez were the success stories of the opening weekend as they both enjoyed goalscoring debuts, but that duo were subsequently usurped by a couple of proven Premier League performers last weekend as Gabriel Jesus and Harry Kane got off the mark.
With the exception of Kane, premium forwards failed to provide much value for money last season, but this time around we look spoiled for choice. Nunez has made selection a little more straightforward by getting himself sent off on his Anfield debut by planting his forehead on Joachim Andersen’s chin.
i‘s Gameweek 3 team has a strong north London influence with two players from Tottenham and Arsenal apiece, while a couple of Liverpool players also make the cut ahead of Monday night’s meeting with 20th placed Manchester United.

Hugo Lloris (Tottenham)
Tottenham have claimed four points in their opening two games despite going behind three times. As pleased as Antonio Conte will be with the resilience his team has shown, he will expect them to tighten up at the back. A first clean sheet of the campaign could be forthcoming against Wolves, who have looked short of firepower. Bruno Lage’s side have only scored once and lack a focal point without the injured Raul Jimenez.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)
Following back-to-back blanks, Trent Alexander-Arnold finds himself on the FPL scrapheap with almost a quarter of a million managers selling him. As frustrating as it is to see a premium asset underperforming, it seems premature to dispense of TAA’s services so soon given he is joint-top for chances created (with six) among defenders and outright top for big chances created (two). And don’t forget, he plays Manchester United next…
Price: £7.5m Points: 4 Gameweek 3 fixture: Man Utd (a)
Joao Cancelo (Man City)
Playing Newcastle at St James’ Park is a trickier proposition now than it has been in previous campaigns, but Manchester City have started their title defence in an efficient fashion, winning both games comfortably. As he was for much of 2021-22, Joao Cancelo has been one of their more impressive players to date, helping his side keep two clean sheets and popping up with an assist against Bournemouth. He has earned more bonus points (four) than any other player in FPL this season.

Neco Williams (Nottingham Forest)
There was plenty of hype about Neco Williams within FPL circles after his move from Liverpool to Nottingham Forest had been confirmed, largely on account of his £4m price tag. The Welshman justified that excitement with an eye-opening performance during Forest’s 1-0 win against West Ham last weekend. Williams had four shots (joint-top with Alexander-Arnold among defenders) and created two chances, both of which included big chances – one that he missed and another that he set up for someone else.
Price: £4.0m Points: 7 Gameweek 3 fixture: Everton (a)
Reece James (Chelsea)
Reece James’ versatility is both a blessing and a curse to FPL managers. On one hand, his ability to play centrally or out wide consolidates his position in Thomas Tuchel’s line-up; on the other, he is so much more effective as a wing-back than as a centre-back. James started on the right of a back three against Spurs, but following Cesar Azpilicueta’s introduction after 73 minutes he was shifted up to wing-back. Within five minutes, he had created a gilt-edged chance for Kai Havertz that was spurned and then scored. Please keep him there, Thomas.
Price: £6.1m Points: 14 Gameweek 3 fixture: Leeds (a)
Mo Salah (Liverpool)
According to FPL’s Fixture Difficulty Chart, which rates how tricky a match is from one (low) to five (high), Liverpool’s upcoming game against United is apparently a four. It should be at the opposite end of the spectrum based on last weekend’s sorry capitulation against Brentford.
Liverpool have made a stuttering start but will hope to turn a corner at Old Trafford after thrashing them 5-0 in the corresponding fixture last season and 4-0 at Anfield. Mo Salah scored five of those and assisted two more, earning 43 FPL points in the process. Erling, pass the armband back to Mo, would you?
Price: £13.0m Points: 14 Gameweek 3 fixture: Man Utd (a)
Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace)
If you have enough wiggle room in your transfer budget to buy Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m), he is the pick of Crystal Palace’s options as he is playing out of position as a striker and is the Eagles’ designated penalty taker. However, if you’re shopping around for a cheaper option, Eberechi Eze could be well worth a look judging by his exceptional display against Liverpool. Eze supplied a precision assist for Zaha’s goal at Anfield and earned himself a bonus point for good measure.
Price: £5.5m Points: 8 Gameweek 3 fixture: Aston Villa (h)
Gabriel Martinelli (Arsenal)
The biggest price riser in FPL so far and with good reason. Gabriel Martinelli is the best value pick in the game at the moment and if you’ve not yet made the move don’t let his new price tag of £6.3m put you off. The Brazilian looks sharp and confident and is playing for an in-form team with a promising run of fixtures coming up. And his manager has been impressed with his form: “This boy, the way he is developing so quickly is just incredible,” Arteta enthused recently.
Price: £6.3m Points: 16 Gameweek 3 fixture: Bournemouth (a)

James Maddison (Leicester)
United’s shambolic form on the pitch and shambolic transfer activity off it have ensured that they are the Premier League’s current crisis club, much to the relief of Leicester. The Foxes have taken one point so far and are caught in transfer limbo with no significant signings made and a trio of stars linked with other clubs. James Maddison’s name keeps cropping up in the rumour mill and with good reason: he has scored five goals and registered four assists in his last six Premier League matches.
Price: £8.0m Points: 12 Gameweek 3 fixture: Southampton (h)
Gabriel Jesus (Arsenal)
Gabriel Jesus has been criticised for being wasteful in front of goal in the past, but the opposite has been true so far this season as he has outperformed his expected goals (1.60) by scoring twice – both in the win against Leicester. The Brazilian has slotted straight into Arsenal’s attack and continued his good form from the back end of last season with former club Manchester City. Jesus has directly contributed to 10 goals (seven goals, three assists) in his previous seven league matches.

Harry Kane (Spurs)
As it stands, Harry Kane is the most transferred out player of the season so far with just under one million managers offloading him since the start of Gameweek 1. The Kane to Erling Haaland move was popular last weekend and with Jesus offering spectacular value, it is understandable that managers are moving away from the Spurs striker. However, he offered a timely reminder of his qualities on Sunday, burying a header deep into injury time to salvage a point at Stamford Bridge.
