Fantasy Premier League tips: The 11 best players to sign for your FPL team in Gameweek 5

Notting Hill Carnival returned following a three-year absence on bank holiday weekend, which is more than you can say for Mo Salah in Fantasy Premier League

Incredibly, FPL’s king of consistency went missing during Liverpool’s record-equalling 9-0 tanking of Bournemouth, failing to provide a single goal or assist despite playing the entire game. Who else has rewatched his open goal miss at Anfield a hundred times expecting a different outcome?

If you entrusted Salah with the captain’s armband this weekend, don’t beat yourself up about it. If a time traveller had informed you of this weekend’s Premier League results before a ball had been kicked, Salah would have been the standout option by far. It was a disappointing outcome but not a poor decision.

Erling Haaland certainly remembered to pack his shooting boots, though, scoring a first hat-trick in English football. Kudos if you handed the Norwegian the captaincy instead.

Last week’s top performers

Goalkeepers:

  • Henderson (Nottingham Forest) – 9
  • De Gea (Man Utd), Fabianski (West Ham), Sanchez (Brighton) – 8

Defenders:

  • Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool) – 17
  • Van Dijk (Liverpool) – 12
  • Dalot (Man Utd) – 11

Midfielders:

  • Sterling (Chelsea) – 15
  • Diaz (Liverpool) – 14
  • Gross (Brighton), Fornals (West Ham) – 11
  • Odegaard (Arsenal), Neves (Wolves) – 10

Forwards:

  • Firmino (Liverpool) – 22
  • Haaland (Man City) – 17
  • Kane (Tottenham) – 10

Salah captainers have precious little time to feel sorry for themselves as Gameweek 5 is here already, with a full round of league fixtures taking place from Tuesday until Thursday.

i‘s team features three Manchester City players ahead of Nottingham Forest’s visit and has a strong Portuguese contingent in midfield. If you would like to receive FPL tips straight to your inbox before each gameweek deadline, sign up for our Fantasy Football Newsletter here.

Gameweek 5 fixtures

  • Fulham vs Brighton
  • Southampton vs Chelsea
  • Leeds vs Everton

Wednesday 31 August

  • Arsenal vs Aston Villa
  • Bournemouth vs Wolves
  • Man City vs Nottingham Forest
  • West Ham vs Tottenham
  • Liverpool vs Newcastle

Thursday 1 September

  • Leicester vs Man Utd

Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal)

Were it not for Gabriel’s sloppiness and Aleksandar Mitrovic’s determination, Aaron Ramsdale might well have been celebrating a third clean sheet in four games this weekend. Despite conceding against Fulham, Arsenal have one of the best defensive records in the league and look a decent bet for a third shutout of the campaign as they host an Aston Villa side in freefall.

Price: £5.0m Points: 15 Gameweek 5 fixture: Aston Villa (h)

Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)

Well, that was much more like it wasn’t it? Trent Alexander-Arnold was given one final opportunity to impress in last week’s picks and justified our faith by delivering a mammoth 17-point score. Alexander-Arnold is top among defenders for chances created (with 11) and third for shots (six) and his chances of keeping a clean sheet could be increased by Callum Wilson’s injury-enforced absence for Newcastle.

Price: £7.5m Points: 21 Gameweek 5 fixture: Newcastle (h)

Joao Cancelo (Man City)

Alexander-Arnold was in the last chance saloon last weekend and the same applies to Joao Cancelo in Gameweek 5 given he has provided returns in just one of his four matches so far. As much as Cancelo’s attacking threat has diminished this season – he is 15th for chances created among defenders – he is still City’s most appealing defensive asset.

Price: £7.1m Points: 19 Gameweek 5 fixture: Nottingham Forest (h)

Pervis Estupinan (Brighton)

Brighton have the best defensive record in the division and the only goal they have conceded came from their own player Alexis Mac Allister in the win over Manchester United. Bearing that in mind, the low-owned Pervis Estupinan looks a great option moving forward. The summer signing from Villarreal has created five chances in only 106 minutes of play and is currently picked by 0.1 per cent of managers.

Price: £4.5m Points: 7 Gameweek 5 fixture: Fulham (a)

Bernardo Silva (Man City)

It seems likely that Pep Guardiola will rotate his team this week, but given Bernardo Silva was used as a substitute in the first two matches he could be a safer pick than others from City’s attack. Silva has managed two goals and an assist in his last two games and also created two big chances in that time.

Price: £6.8m Points: 24 Gameweek 5 fixture: Nottingham Forest (h)

Rodrigo (Leeds)

Rodrigo’s new owners were left disappointed when his scoring streak came to an end against Brighton, but he could get back amongst the points soon given Leeds’ upcoming schedule. They play Everton, who are yet to keep a clean sheet this week, followed by matches with Brentford and Nottingham Forest. Mitrovic is the only player in the division to have had more shots than Rodrigo (19 to 18).

Price: £6.5m Points: 37 Gameweek 5 fixture: Everton (h)

Goncalo Guedes (Wolves)

A lack of potency in front of goal has cost Wolves so far and Bruno Lage will be expecting improvement against a Bournemouth side that was hit for nine at Anfield. Goncalo Guedes has passed the eye test since joining from Valencia, firing off five shots on goal and creating five chances in his two starts. He’s also a huge differential with an ownership of just 0.4 per cent.

Price: £6.0m Points: 10 Gameweek 5 fixture: Bournemouth (a)

Pascal Gross (Brighton)

On the one hand, Pascal Gross’ current points streak looks to be unsustainable. On the other, he is in superb form, has great underlying statistics and is extremely well priced. Gross has created three big chances so far and had three big chances to score, both of which are top among Brighton’s squad.

i‘s top tip: If you are after a differential from the in-form Seagulls, consider Leandro Trossard (£6.5m) instead. The Belgian has had more shots (11) and shots in the box (nine) than any of his teammates.

Price: £5.8m Points: 35 Gameweek 5 fixture: Fulham (a)

More Fantasy Premier League

Bruno Fernandes (Man Utd)

There was a time when Bruno Fernandes was virtually an essential FPL pick, but presently he is found in only 2.1 per cent of squads. Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival dented Fernandes’ appeal, but over the past two games he has looked close to his best, firing off six shots of which five have been in the box. United’s upcoming opponents Leicester, meanwhile, have already conceded 10 goals.

Price: £9.8m Points: 12 Gameweek 5 fixture: Leicester (a)

Erling Haaland (Man City)

As already mentioned, the threat of rotation looms large above City’s most desirable FPL assets. Sadly, it’s impossible to read Guardiola’s mind. If Haaland does start the upside is huge: he has had 10 big chances in the Premier League; Mitrovic is second in that list on seven, with Harry Kane, Darwin Nunez and Wilfried Zaha next on five.

Price: £11.8m Points: 41 Gameweek 5 fixture: Nottingham Forest (h)

Harry Kane (Spurs)

Harry Kane’s FPL owners were put through the full range of emotions on Sunday as he had a topsy-turfy afternoon at the City Ground. Kane scored twice but blotted his copybook by missing a penalty and getting himself booked.

Despite that rare spot-kick miss, Kane has started the season in good form with four goals in as many games and he has a good record against West Ham, netting 11 times in 18 league meetings.

Price: £11.4m Points: 26 Gameweek 5 fixture: West Ham (a)
