Both Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte face touchline bans after being sent off at the final whistle of Tottenham’s heated 2-2 draw with Chelsea.
Spurs twice came from behind in a controversial London derby, with the two head coaches coming together on more than one occasion as tempers boiled over.
i looks at the flash-points in what turned out to be yet another infamous Battle of the Bridge.
Bentancur vs Havertz
In the build-up to Pierre-Emile Hojberg’s equaliser, Rodrigo Bentancur appeared to foul Kai Havertz, though the Tottenham midfielder protested he had got a toe to the ball. i understands the incident was too far back and was therefore outside the attacking phase of play, meaning VAR could not rule out the goal regardless.
Son handball?
When Jorginho gave the ball away before Hojbjerg’s goal, it briefly pinged around the box and Chelsea’s defence believed Son Heung-min had handled.
Richarlison offside
Edouard Mendy also complained that an offside Richarlison, who had come on for Ryan Sessegnon around the hour mark, was blocking his view for Tottenham’s first equaliser – though the Brazilian was clearly not interfering with play.
Tuchel vs Conte (Round 1)
Aside from both managers, Chelsea and Spurs each had a member of their technical staff booked as tensions came to a head after the first equaliser. Tuchel appeared to object to both the Bentancur foul and Conte’s reaction.
Tuchel channels Mourinho
With the Chelsea boss on a yellow, he celebrated James’ goal which put Chelsea 2-1 up by sprinting down the touchline – also a bookable offence for leaving the technical area. He wasn’t carded.
Romero vs Cucurella
Before the corner that led to Kane’s stoppage-time equaliser, Cristian Romero was seen pulling Marc Cucurella’s hair. The centre-back was not punished as Spurs levelled in the dying seconds.
Tuchel vs Conte (Round 2)
Tuchel and Conte will each miss the next game for their respective clubs after their melee at full-time. The duo had already squared up to each other when tensions spilled over after Spurs’ first equaliser on a hot afternoon in west London.
And when the final whistle came moments after Kane headed home in stoppage time to deny Chelsea three points once again, both managers were quick to go at each other.
When they shook hands at full time, it appeared as though Tuchel would not let go of Conte’s hand. The Italian reacted furiously, while Tuchel appeared to point at his eyes, suggesting Conte hadn’t made eye contact when shaking hands.
The pair had to be separated by technical staff, security and players.
Referee Anthony Taylor showed both men a straight red, which means they are now suspended for their respective upcoming league games.
Chelsea travel to Leeds United next weekend but Conte will not be allowed on the touchline. Spurs, meanwhile, host Wolves in Saturday’s early kick-off.
