Newcastle United transfer news: Joao Pedro ‘progress made’, £25m Edson Alvarez rumour and loan talks ongoing

Newcastle United hope for a transfer breakthrough this week as the club work on two deals and believe a move for Watford’s Joao Pedro is possible.

Newcastle are targeting two permanent signings before the end of the month, with forward Pedro the most progressed of their targets. He missed the Hornets’ game at Preston on Saturday with a calf injury but i understands there have been further talks between the two clubs over the weekend.

Watford are reluctant to lose Pedro but the player is interested in the move to Newcastle. So far there remains a gap in valuation and the Magpies’ offer.

There have also been claims in Mexico that the club have submitted a £25m bid for Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez, while Newcastle have been in touch with Chelsea over loan targets Christian Pulisic, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Conor Gallagher.

Newcastle’s need to add to their attacking options was emphasised by Callum Wilson being withdrawn with a tight hamstring during Sunday’s thrilling 3-3 draw against champions Manchester City.

Eddie Howe said Newcastle are hopeful of adding to their squad this week. “I hope so,” he said. “But as I sit here now I’ve got no guarantee of that. I can’t give you any certainty but we hope to add to the squad.”

Newcastle look likely to rest Wilson for their midweek assignment at Tranmere in the League Cup, a competition the Magpies are taking seriously this year as they aim to end their long wait for a trophy.

The anxiety around Wilson – Newcastle’s main source of goals and on the scoresheet on Sunday – is that he suffers a recurrence of his hamstring problem.

“Callum was feeling his hamstring at half-time. It was just a tightness, nothing more than that, but we were aware watching him in the second half that he wasn’t fully opening up.

“We felt at that moment the team probably needed someone who could fully sprint, and we just wanted to protect him from serious injury.”

Newcastle’s new CEO Darren Eales starts work on Monday and was at the game on Sunday. He is understood to have responsibility for overall club strategy, with Dan Ashworth and Howe taking control of recruitment and the football side of the business.
