Nottingham Forest had an unsuccessful return to the Premier League after 23 years away with a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle on the opening day of the season.
Steve Cooper’s side are aiming to pick up their first points back in the top flight against West Ham on Sunday, but they have caught the eye with an unusual shirt design as they are yet to reveal this season’s sponsors.
There is no great mystery as to why Forest’s shirts are blank – they haven’t ironed out a deal yet after their previous agreement with boiler company BOXT expired.
BOXT were keen to continue their sponsorship of the club, but said that they had what they described as a “multi-million pound offer” turned down in the summer.
Forest are thought to be holding out for a sponsor worth around £7m to £10m a season.
Premier League clubs are not required to bear a sponsor on their shirt, though rules are set to be introduced dictating exactly who they can sign agreements with.
It is anticipated that new legislation will prevent clubs from advertising gambling companies on the front of their shirts.
However, it is a lucrative opportunity and since the late 1980s, all top-flight English clubs have had shirt sponsors.
The first official shirt sponsorship in Europe came in the Bundesliga, with German football leading the way in 1973.
