Manchester City 2-0 Newcastle (Foden 15′, Silva 67′)
Goals from Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva helped Manchester City overcome Newcastle and close the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal to two points.
The Gunners take on Bournemouth this afternoon and City made the most of their Saturday lunchtime opportunity to put the spotlight back on Mikel Arteta’s side.
City capitalised on a confident start thanks to Foden, who evaded a couple of challenges before seeing his strike deflect off Sven Botman to beat Nick Pope in the 15th minute.
Newcastle responded well, although City arguably should have doubled their lead when Kevin De Bruyne found Erling Haaland, who headed wide.
Callum Wilson then missed an opportunity to level for Newcastle, mis-kicking his attempt when unmarked 10 yards out.
After the break, Newcastle rolled the dice with a triple sub but it was City who doubled their lead through Silva, just minutes after he had replaced De Bruyne.
It was the 1000th Premier League goal for City at home, with Silva picking out the bottom corner after quick play from Haaland and Jack Grealish.
