When the Fantasy Premier League gods are against you, they are really against you, as numerous managers found to their cost during a punishing Gameweek 15.
It was one of those weekends in which very little seemed to go right. The usually reliable Chelsea defence conceded three goals against West Ham; Manchester City let in a late consolation to Watford; Harry Kane blanked again as Spurs stuck three past Norwich; Fred, of all people, hoovered up the points in Manchester United’s win in Ralf Rangnick’s first game.
Congratulations to those who emerged from it all with a green arrow. As for those left cursing their luck, the good news is that another round of fixtures is imminent. There is an earlier than usual transfer deadline of 6.30pm on Friday for Gameweek 16, as Brentford and Watford will get things underway under the lights at the Community Stadium.
The top three teams all play at home on Saturday this weekend, with Manchester City taking on Wolves in the early kick-off, before Chelsea host Leeds and Liverpool welcome back Stevie G and his in-form Aston Villa side to Anfield in the 3pms. Elsewhere, Ralf Rangnick takes his Manchester United side to East Anglia to face Norwich City, while Antonio Conte’s Spurs are in action against injury-hit Brighton.
This is i‘s Gameweek 16 squad which is valued at £82.7m.
David de Gea (Man Utd)
Only four clubs in the division have kept fewer clean sheets than Manchester United this season, but Sunday’s shutout against Crystal Palace should give David De Gea and co some confidence going forward. The Red Devils couldn’t have cherry-picked a better opponent to try and build some defensive momentum against considering Norwich have scored fewer home goals (five) than any other team.
Price: £5.0m Points: 56 Gameweek 16 fixture: Norwich (a)
Nuno Tavares (Arsenal)
It seems as though Kieran Tierney has a fight on to reclaim his starting place given Mikel Arteta has preferred Portuguese youngster Nuno Tavares at left-back to the fit-again Scot in recent weeks. Tavares, a summer acquisition from Benfica, endured a difficult evening when Arsenal were thumped by Liverpool at Anfield but otherwise has acquitted himself well. No defender has attempted more shots than his seven over the past four gameweeks.
Price: £4.3m Points: 29 Gameweek 16 fixture: Southampton (h)
Ben Davies (Tottenham)
For the majority of his seven-and-a-half years at Spurs, Ben Davies has played the role of understudy to an established first-choice left-back, initially to Danny Rose and more recently to Sergio Reguilon. However, the Welshman has emerged as an integral component in Antonio Conte’s system, slotting seamlessly into a left-sided centre-back role in the Italian’s 3-4-3 system. Davies has started in all four of Spurs’ league games since Conte’s appointment, averaging 7.25 points per match.
Price: £4.4m Points: 29 Gameweek 16 fixture: Brighton (a)
Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace)
Despite leaking a few goals recently, Crystal Palace’s defence ranks fourth in the division, behind only the top three, for expected goals conceded. The Eagles’ hopes of claiming a first clean sheet since Gameweek 11 could be boosted by Everton’s poor recent form. Marc Guehi is the standout Palace defender to consider as he has scored two goals over the past four gameweeks and is second only to the aforementioned Davies for expected goals amongst defenders in that time.
Price: £4.5m Points: 52 Gameweek 16 fixture: Everton (h)
Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)
Of the eight most-popular defenders in FPL, Trent Alexander-Arnold was the only one to register a return of any description in Gameweek 15, earning nine points during Liverpool‘s late show at Molineux. Alexander-Arnold has been a model of consistency so far this campaign and his 99 points is 15 clear of the third-highest scoring players in the game (Man City’s Joao Cancelo and Bernardo Silva) and second only to runaway leader Mo Salah.
Price: £8.0m Points: 99 Gameweek 16 fixture: Aston Villa (h)
Mason Mount (Chelsea)
Mason Mount was unfortunate to be on the losing side at the weekend after providing an assist for Thiago Silva’s opener at the London Stadium, before scoring a spectacular second goal himself. Both City and Liverpool capitalised on Chelsea‘s wobble by winning their games at the weekend and Thomas Tuchel will be expecting a reaction from his side when Leeds visit Stamford Bridge. Mount is the third-most transferred in player this week, at the time of writing.
Price: £7.5m Points: 71 Gameweek 16 fixture: Leeds (h)
Mo Salah (Liverpool)
For a long, long time on Saturday, it looked as though Mo Salah would fail to provide a goal or assist for only the second time this season. How foolish we were for doubting him. As the clock ticked towards the fourth and final minute of added time, Salah raced into the Wolves area before pulling the ball back to the king of the iconic goal, Divock Origi, to secure a dramatic winner. Salah now has 13 goals and 10 assists across his 15 matches this season.
Price: £13.1m Points: 152 Gameweek 16 fixture: Aston Villa (h)
Bernardo Silva (Man City)
Salah is the clear favourite to win the PFA’s Premier League Player of the Year award given his exploits so far, but Bernardo Silva might run him close if he can maintain his remarkable form in the long run. Following City’s 2-1 win against Aston Villa in which Silva scored a stunning volley, Pep Guardiola labelled him the “best“ player in the league. He followed that up with a double against Watford on Saturday and will be in confident mood ahead of the visit of Wolves on Saturday lunchtime.
Price: £7.5m Points: 84 Gameweek 16 fixture: Wolves (h)
Son Heung-min (Spurs)
Brighton will be without their three first-choice central defenders for the visit of Spurs which should benefit Son Heung-min and dare we say it, Harry Kane, for Sunday’s trip to the Amex. Captain Lewis Dunk will miss the entire festive period due to a knee injury, Adam Webster has a calf injury and Shane Duffy is suspended leaving Graham Potter with a paucity of options at the back. Son has rediscovered his form over the past week, scoring twice and providing an assist in wins over Brentford and Norwich.
Price: £10.4m Points: 81 Gameweek 16 fixture: Brighton (a)
Cristiano Ronaldo (Man Utd)
Cristiano Ronaldo ranks joint-top for shots (15) and second for shots in the box (13) over the past four gameweeks ahead of Saturday’s match against bottom of the table Norwich. Rangnick’s comments about Ronaldo’s work-rate after Sunday’s win over Palace are also encouraging for his owners in FPL. “By the way, Cristiano Ronaldo’s work off the ball, chapeau,” Rangnick said of the veteran’s new-found desire for pressing. Managers in possession of a misfiring Kane may be tempted to make the switch…
Price: £12.3m Points: 58 Gameweek 16 fixture: Norwich (a)
Josh King (Watford)
Over the past four gameweeks, Josh King has a higher expected goals total (2.70) than any other forward in the league, despite playing against Manchester United, Leicester, Chelsea and Manchester City in that time. Watford’s upcoming run raises King’s appeal further: after facing Brentford on Friday, the Hornets face Burnley, Crystal Palace and Wolves in their next three games. Although Emmanuel Dennis has outscored King of late, his potential involvement at the Africa Cup of Nations makes the Norwegian a safer pick.
Price: £5.7m Points: 54 Gameweek 16 fixture: Brentford (a)
