Steve McClaren has predicted a bright future for Derby County as he spoke of his hope for a resolution in the long-running takeover saga.
Mike Ashley is the latest name to emerge as a potential saviour of the club, which is in administration and bottom of the Championship.
Former club technical director McClaren, now a senior advisor at the Rams, believes the club is close to new ownership and with Wayne Rooney impressing in his first job in management, there are reasons to be encouraged.
“It just needs taking over,” he told i.
“There are many stumbling blocks towards that but there’s people interested. It can be a great club again.
“I’m still involved, the administrators still wanted me involved in terms of people taking over the club and giving advice on that and also just seeing the progress that Wayne is making as a manager has been fantastic.”
McClaren says he would be open to a return to management himself.
He says: “I’m still involved at Derby, I’m still watching them very, very closely. Wayne is a great example of a young manager coming up with great mentality, great resilience. He’s finding his own path.
“To work with Derby over the last 12 months has been great, being out on the grass watching coaches coach, helping where I can has been fantastic. [My role at] Fifa is more of a worldwide role, what are the current trends in football? It’s still at the coalface but one step removed from it.
“Do I want to go back into the coalface and into the pressure cooker environment? That would be no problem for me. In time that might called upon, whether it’s at club level or international level I’ve still a lot to give on that.
“Whilst I’ve still got the energy and passion to keep going, travelling the world, travelling with Derby – I’ve still got that. There’s been good times and bad times but to use my experience, I’m excited by that.”
