Leicester vs Brighton: Player ratings, analysis and reaction as Danny Welbeck denies coasting Foxes

Leicester 1-1 Brighton (Daka ’46, Welbeck ’82)

Leicester City ceded a lead at home for the second time in a week after a Danny Welbeck header secured Brighton a point in a low-quality game at the King Power Stadium. The full-time whistle led to grumble and the occasional boo from home supporters who worry that their team is coasting a little.

Leicester had opened the scoring after a scramble in Brighton’s penalty area. Both Ademola Lookman and James Maddison had shots blocked, the ball eventually rebounding to Harvey Barnes, whose snapshot was expertly saved by Robert Sanchez. But Sanchez’s parry fell to the feet of Patson Daka, who swept into a virtually unguarded net.

Brighton were without both manager Graham Potter and his assistant Billy Reid after both tested positive for Covid-19 and were tepid for long periods of the match before falling behind. Their aim to counter at pace or pass the ball across defence and midfield looking for a gap when their opponents are set fell down repeatedly through slack passing and Leicester midfielders robbing them of possession.

If Brighton couldn’t get any passing moves going before half-time, Leicester’s final ball was lacking. They forced groans through either choosing the wrong pass, misplacing the right one or overplaying on the edge of the area. Their goal came through the industry of Maddison to intercept an Adam Webster pass, but also because Leicester’s players took shots with their first touch.

More from Football

Brighton made changes to try and change the game following Leicester’s goal, and both substitutes combined to create their best chance. Tariq Lamptey’s cross found the head of Danny Welbeck, but Kasper Schmeichel sprawled to his left to claw the ball away.

But with Leicester dropping deeper towards their own goal, and their supporters nervous after the denouement of their previous home game, Brighton seized advantage when Neal Maupay’s cross begged Welbeck to head the ball down past Schmeichel via the left-hand post.
