Team news

Son Heung-min is expected to be out until February with a muscle injury which he suffered during a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea in the Carabao Cup.

Eric Dier and Steven Bergwijn could return to the squad but it is unlikely they will start. Conte said that Bergwijn is not 100 per cent fit.

Leicester will still be without James Justin. He is back in training ground but will only return to the squad when “it’s the right time”, according to manager Brendan Rodgers.

Timothy Castagne is out for eight to nine weeks after an operation to deal with a thigh issue, while Kelechi Iheanacho, Wilfred Ndidi, Daniel Amartey and Nampalys Mendy remain at the African Cup of Nations.

Can Kane lead Tottenham without Son?

After the Euros it was heavily rumoured that Kane would leave Spurs for Manchester City after the England captain’s revealing interview with Gary Neville.

Kane said he wanted to play in the biggest games, but has since suffered a big drop off in form.

His performances this season are far from the levels of previous years and it took him until 19 December to notch just his second goal of the campaign, when netting against Liverpool.

Since that game Kane appears to have found some form, scoring three goals in four league games, but Son Heung-min’s injury will be a new challenge for the No 10 in this difficult season.

Last season Kane and Son broke the record for the most Premier League goal combinations (14) previously held by Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton, showing how much they rely on each other.

Son has outscored Kane this season, becoming the main man at Spurs. Can Kane hit a good run of form and retake that title?

Kane’s alarming drop-off

Minutes per goal in the Premier League:

  • 2017-18: 102.8
  • 2018-19: 142.8
  • 2019-20: 143.8
  • 2020-21: 134.1
  • 2021-22: 358

What happened last time they met?

This will be the first meeting between these sides this season. The last time they clashed was back in May when Tottenham defeated Leicester 4-2 at the King Power.

Leicester took the lead via a Jamie Vardy penalty after being tripped by the trailing foot of Toby Alderweireld. A few minutes before half-time Harry Kane equalised with a right footed volley inside the box smashed into the net.

Another penalty was awarded to Vardy after Davinson Sanchez tangled arms with the number nine which he converted.

Sanchez managed to redeem himself by putting Kasper Schmeichel under pressure, resulting in an own goal from a corner after a lacklustre attempt to punch the ball out.

Then Gareth Bale came on to score a brace that ended Leicester’s Champions League chances.
