Sevilla sporting director Monchi has re-iterated that defender Diego Carlos will remain at the club in January despite Newcastle United’s “good offer”.
The La Liga club, fighting Real Madrid for the title this season, opted to reject Newcastle’s series of offers because they felt they did not meet their valuation.
Newcastle tabled a £30million bid for the Brazil international but Monchi, who is arguably the shrewdest transfer negotiator in world football, explained that they were partly motivated by the difficulty of sourcing a replacement.
And he ruled out any chance of the club revising their stance while offering the Magpies hope that they could revisit the deal in the summer.
“The Newcastle offer was a good offer, a respectable offer. I have to say that,” he said, when asked by i about the status of the deal.
“But the offer, our board and management team thought it wasn’t enough. It’s true that maybe it wasn’t the right time. It’s a difficult market to find a replacement for a player like Diego Carlos.
“It’s a market that takes place over a very short period of time. Maybe if that offer comes along in the summer then things might have changed.
“The offer was a very good offer, a very respectable offer but not at the best possible time.”
Reports suggested that Carlos had handed in a transfer request and was pushing for a move away from Sevilla. But Monchi said there was no hint of discontent in the defender’s demeanour since negotiations with Newcastle ended earlier this week.
“I was talking to Diego this morning and he’s happy. At the end of the day he’s staying here at his club, a club that really wanted him.
“If he was really angry then maybe he would have changed his opinion but he seems happy.”
Sevilla are one of Europe’s most impressive clubs when it comes to recruitment and concluded a loan deal for Anthony Martial this week.
Unsurprisingly there have been Premier League clubs looking at their players, with Newcastle now flush with resources after their Saudi-backed takeover.
Monchi said discussions were conducted with “respect” with Newcastle’s new-look negotiating team, which has seen co-owners Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi leading on transfer deals.
“We’ve had conversations based on a lot of respect. They’ve understood that we can reject their offer,” he said.
“The first contact comes from the player’s agent. They said ‘Maybe Newcastle are prepared to make an offer’.
“The first offer was a month ago. With Newcastle it’s been very correct the way it’s gone ahead. We’ve had video calls and each side has explained their view.
“We consider the negotiation finished because I don’t think we’re going to start negotiations again because we’re all clear how we think about this transfer.”
Newcastle have turned their attention to Brighton’s Dan Burn, who has been valued at £15million. An initial offer has been turned down but the clubs remain in contact.
