The “fun” – if such a concept even exists – in Fantasy Premier League has been somewhat sapped out of the game recently due to last-minute postponements, but if anything will get disengaged managers interested again it is the prospect of a double gameweek.
With Brentford, Brighton, Burnley, Chelsea, Leicester, Manchester United, Tottenham and Watford scheduled to play two games over the next seven days, this is the biggest double gameweek of the season so far. Exciting news, we’re sure you’ll agree.
Of course, whether all four of those additional fixtures get off the ground is another matter entirely given the recent spate of last-minute cancellations. But while Covid remains prevalent in the Premier League, cases have dipped for the second week running. Should that trend continue, more games should take place as and when they are supposed to, which is good news for everyone, not least fed up FPL players.
With Mo Salah currently away representing Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations, the captaincy debate is wide open ahead of Gameweek 22 and most managers will be drawn towards those who potentially have two matches. As mentioned in this week’s tips article, though, do not overlook single gameweek players with excellent fixtures, when it comes to transfer strategy or captaincy decisions. Liverpool and West Ham, for instance, both have excellent fixtures this weekend, raising the prospects of Diogo Jota and Jarrod Bowen, especially.
Here are the five best captaincy options this week, featuring a single gameweek player and a differential owned by less than five per cent of managers.
Harry Kane (Spurs)
Tottenham were outclassed over two legs against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semi-final and Antonio Conte is beginning to look rather sulky at the club’s current predicament. With key players out injured, Spurs do not appear to be in their best shape ahead of Sunday’s north London derby against Arsenal and next week’s meeting with Leicester, but on the plus side, Harry Kane tends to raise his game against both. The England skipper has scored 11 times in 16 games against Arsenal and a remarkable 17 in 16 versus Leicester.

Cristiano Ronaldo (Man Utd)
Ideally, your captain in a double gameweek will be someone who looks nailed on to start in both matches which given Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent fitness issues make him slightly less appealing than Kane. When asked whether he would be fit enough to play against Aston Villa, Ronaldo replied: “Fingers crossed. I’m confident.” If the 36-year-old is as healthy as he suggests, he is arguably the standout armband option for games against Aston Villa and Brentford.

Josh King (Watford)
The Josh King vs Emmanuel Dennis debate has split the FPL community lately given the former has the better underlying stats while the latter has the more profitable returns. King’s expected goals (xG) total (of 6.58) is comfortably more than Dennis’ tally of 3.70, but when it comes to actual goals, the Nigerian leads the Norwegian by eight to five. King looks the safer option this week, though, as Dennis had to be taken off at half-time against Spurs last time out and will be assessed by Watford’s medical team before Newcastle.

Diogo Jota (Liverpool)
It feels wrong giving the armband to a single gameweek player, but with few standout options to choose from, FPL managers could do worse than to pick Diogo Jota for Liverpool’s game against Brentford. After keeping three clean sheets in their opening five league matches, Brentford have since managed just one in their last 15 and conceded four times against Southampton on Tuesday night. Jota has the highest xG of any player in the division in home matches this season and could be an explosive captaincy option.

Differential: Leandro Trossard (Brighton)
Owned by fewer than two per cent of FPL managers at the time of writing, Leandro Trossard could be an excellent differential pick this week. Despite being listed as a midfielder in FPL, Trossard has generally played as a centre-forward this season, either alongside Neal Maupay or on his own as a false no 9. The Belgian tends to do be at his most productive when playing at home, with 10 of his 14 Premier League goals being scored at the Amex, which is where both of Brighton’s games will be played.
