North Macdeonia 0-10 England (Mead 5′, 12′, 47′, 53′, Toone 24′, 74′, 78′, White 41′, Stanway 45′, 56′)
As had been expected, it was a comfortable evening in Skopje for England as they strolled past North Macedonia to a 10-0 victory on Friday night.
Having scored 53 goals, conceded none and won all six of their previous World Cup qualifying games, there was little doubt that the world’s 132nd-ranked side would be as easy a test as they come.
“This is what we wanted, we wanted to create a lot of chances and score a lot of goals and concede none,” head coach Sarina Wiegman said.
“So that’s what we did. We found each other better and better in the pockets and behind the defence and hopefully we can do that also against opponents from a higher level.
And that was quickly proven to be true, with Beth Mead opening England’s account before the clock had even struck five minutes. She extended her personal tally to four while Ella Toone netted a hat-trick, Georgia Stanway bagged a brace and Ellen White, who became the first woman to reach 50 goals for England, also scored.
North Macedonia just couldn’t cope with England’s attacking forces with Mead and Lauren Hemp being given lots of freedom on the wings. It was only England’s own inaccuracies in front of goal which prevented the scoreline from being wider.
Yet despite the sheer gulf in class and the fact that there was little doubt over how this game would play out, Sarina Wiegman opted against rotation and instead fielded a squad which will likely be almost identical to that which walks out onto the pitch for the opening game of the Euros at Old Trafford in the summer.
That was a decision which has been the focus of much debate. There are, of course, merits to having one team who play together and are able to gel ahead of a major tournament. When a team like this is used, the main aim for the match will be coming away unscathed – winning is already a foregone conclusion.
