West Ham vs Everton: Player ratings and analysis as Bowen winner pushes Toffees closer to relegation scrap

West Ham 2-1 Everton (Cresswell 32′, Bowen 59′ | Holgate 53′)

Frank Lampard and Everton’s Premier League status looks increasingly precarious after they slumped to another damaging away defeat.

Goals from Aaron Cresswell and Jarrod Bowen, either side of Mason Holgate’s equaliser, condemned the travel-sick Toffees to a 10th loss on the road this term and kept them firmly in the relegation mix.

A red card for captain Michael Keane capped a miserable afternoon for Lampard at the home of the club where he began his playing career.

The Goodison boss clearly did not intend to come to the capital to eke out a point, naming an attacking line-up of Richarlison, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Demarai Gray.

He also handed a recall to Donny van de Beek, only for the Dutchman to pull out in the warm-up – although his replacement Holgate did find the net.

But that was as far as Lampard’s luck stretched and his team still boast the worst away record in the country with a paltry six points from a possible 42.

West Ham, boosted by the return of Bowen after a month out with a foot injury, went straight on the offensive against their increasingly brittle opponents.

A sharp move involving Michail Antonio, Bowen and Said Benrahma culminated in Pablo Fornals shaping to shoot six yards out, but Jordan Pickford was quickly off his line to deny the Spaniard.

Everton could have gone ahead when Alex Iwobi slipped Richarlison in behind. The Brazilian nudged the ball round Hammers keeper Lukasz Fabianksi, but full-back Ryan Fredericks got back to clear the danger.

Moments later, in the 32nd minute, West Ham made the breakthrough after Bowen was fouled by Holgate 25 yards out, Cresswell curling a stunning free-kick past Pickford and into the top corner.

Richarlison had a glorious chance to equalise when he raced onto a long punt forward, but his ambitious attempt to lob Fabianski cleared the crossbar as well.

After the break a mistake on halfway by Declan Rice allowed Iwobi to slide the ball through to Calvert-Lewin, but his angled drive on the run clipped the bar.

The equaliser came in the 53rd minute following an unconvincing punch at a corner from Fabianski. Richarlison prodded the loose ball to Holgate, whose shot through a crowd of players defected off Fornals as it flew in.

Yet Everton could not even hold on for five minutes as West Ham retook the lead. Bowen was on hand to tuck in the rebound after Jordan Pickford saved Antonio’s shot following a quick breakaway.

Keane’s red card, for a second foul on Antonio, summed up another wretched road trip for Lampard keeps Everton still perilously close to the bottom three.
