Every living Lioness from the past 50 years will be invited to Wembley when England Women play USA in a meeting of the European and world champions on 7 October, the FA has confirmed.
The national stadium will mark a half-century since the first official England Women’s fixture on 18 November 197. i revealed last month that members of that original squad had still not been given official caps – and plans to put that right have been delayed because records have been lost.
However, former internationals will be present for the first game at Wembley since Sunday’s historic 2-1 victory over Germany.
The fixture is subject to the Lionesses sealing World Cup qualification in September, but they are expected to do that against nearest group rivals Austria on 3 September. They need just a point in Wiener Neustadt, or failing that a win at home to Luxembourg in Stoke on 6 September.
“It would be the perfect game for our squad to meet another strong team after so many tough games in the Euros,” head coach Sarina Wiegman said.
“It is good we enjoy the moment we are in after this wonderful summer, but we know we still have to work to do to take the next step forward.
How to get England vs USA tickets
England members were able to buy tickets – priced from £10 for adults and £5 for under-16s – from 2 August, with the game going on general sale on 3 August amid a huge spike in interest in attending women’s games.
More than 20,000 tickets for the Luxembourg game have already been sold.

“As a team, we take nothing for granted with our goal of reaching the World Cup and whoever we play at home in October it will be special to have another Wembley fixture. After the positive experiences we have had this summer, it will be great to welcome as many fans as possible so that we can say thanks again for their incredible support.”
A clash with the reigning world champions will be their biggest test since winning a first major trophy, and gives the Lionesses the chance to avenge their 2019 World Cup semi-final defeat – when USA striker Alex Morgan appeared to mock England with a controversial tea-drinking celebration after scoring the winning goal.
