Boos for Hasenhuttl as Almiron leads Newcastle romp at Saints – ratings and analysis

Southampton 1-4 Newcastle (Perraud 89’ | Almiron 35’, Wood 58’, Willock ’62, Guimaraes 90+1’)

Newcastle strolled to a routine victory in the rain at St Mary’s to make it four wins on the bounce and broaden the discussion of whether they can be considered title contenders this season.

There appears to be now slowing of Eddie Howe’s side and despite their best efforts Southampton latest 35 minutes before Miguel Almiron got the ball rolling for the Magpies.

Chris Wood came on at the break and made it 2-0 with a smart turn and finish, before Joe Willock scored on the counter attack. Romain Perraud got an impressive consolation late on, but Bruno Guimaraes responded to restore the three-goal advantage.

The second-half cruise also gave Howe the chance to rest up some of his players. Next up in the league is a home tie with Chelsea after Wednesday’s EPL Cup clash against Crystal Palace, while for Saints there is a growing unease that a relegation battle is looming.

Southampton player ratings

Gavin Bazunu – Couldn’t do much about any of Newcastle’s goals and wasn’t really called upon to produce any world-class saves either. A miserable day for the goalkeeper in the rain. 6

Romain Perraud – Offered less and less going forward as the game dragged on and ended up pinned back worrying about Almiron. A tough afternoon for Perraud but out of nowhere popped up with a consolation. 6

Armel Bella-Kotchap – The calmer head in the heart of defence but, like Salisu, was tested beyond his limits when Wood came into the fray. Was replaced by Caleta-Car before the end. 6

Mohammed Salisu – Survived handball scare early on and played well until Wood came on and proved too much of a handful for the entire home defensive line. 6

Juan Larios – Had a fairly steady start to the game handling Jacob Murphy and Joe Willock, but was replaced on 32 minutes with an injury. 7

James Ward-Prowse – The only real avenue to goal for Saints came from Ward-Prowse’s right foot, but he was ineffectual for much of it against as well-pressing Newcastle midfield. 6

Ainsley Maitland-Niles – Had a quiet start to the game and was shunted to right-back following Larios’ injury. Bamboozled by Almiron for the opening goal and struggled in his new position. 5

Theo Walcott – Spent the early phases at St Mary’s stretching the game well but soon drifted into obscurity. Was hit in the head by a Toon clearance. Came off on 64 minutes with the game gone. 6

Stuart Armstrong – Bustling in the middle of midfield, Armstrong carved out a golden chance for Elyounoussi in first-half stoppage time. But he was too often pegged back by the Newcastle midfield and spent much of the second half chasing the game. 6

Mohamed Elyounoussi – Missed an open goal at the far post in first-half stoppage time and struggled at times to get the better of his man Trippier. 5

Che Adams – Missed a sitter of a chance on the counter attack early in the second half. A volley that fizzed wide. Adams was the target man for Saints all afternoon but Newcastle generally dealt with him well. 6

Subs:

Romeo Lavia – Replaced the injured Larios midway through the first half but appeared unable to fix Southampton’s disjointed offensive unit. 6

Duje Caleta-Car – Had 20 minutes with the game already lost. Stood up to Wood well. 6

Samuel Edozie – Brought on for Walcott but did little more than the veteran in terms of threatening Newcastle’s clean sheet. 5

Adam Armstrong – Adams was hooked after the third Newcastle goal and Armstrong given the task of leading the line. It didn’t go overly well. 6

Joe Aribo – Replaced Stuart Armstrong and ran around with plenty of enthusiasm but it was too late to get the link-up going with Saints’ other substitutions. 6

Newcastle player ratings

Nick Pope – An early bundle almost led to a Saints goal but Pope barely put a foot (or glove) wrong after that. In slippery conditions he provided a cool head for the Newcastle defence. 7

Dan Burn – A steady defensive display, Burns held his shape and barely gave an inch to Armstrong or Walcott. Enjoyed playing in front of the travelling Toon fans. 7

Sven Botman – Had very little to do thanks to Guimaraes cutting off most Saints balls forward. Held his position well and looked comfortable. 7

Fabian Schar – Another routine afternoon for one of the Premier League’s in-form defenders. Had a handle on Adams and the drifting Lavia too. 7

Kieran Trippier – Overcame an injury scare in first-half stoppage time with Gareth Southgate watching on. Became increasingly dominant down his flank and set Willock up for the third goal. 8

Joe Willock – Had a steady game and exploited the space when Saints opened up midway through the second half, to score the third. A nice toe-poked finish. 7

Bruno Guimaraes – Eventually got into the game and shut out the Southampton service to Adams. Dominant as usual and deserved his goal at the death. 8

Sean Longstaff – Missed a golden chance early in the game, only for the offside flag to save his blushes. A steady performance and worked well with Almiron down the right, although he stepped up for the Saints consolation and was left stranded. 6

Jacob Murphy – Not at his dazzling best but didn’t need to be. Worked well to support Willock and hassle Ward-Prowse, who was Southampton’s only real danger. 6

Callum Wilson – Isolated at times but was strong enough to aid Almiron with the opener. Wilson was unwell in the week and came off at half time for Wood. 6

Miguel Almiron – Was quiet until his opening goal, a rapid-fire exchange of passes and a cool finish. Seven goals in seven games for Almiron now. 8

Subs:

Chris Wood – Did what he does best for the second 45 after replacing Wilson, and got his goal when turning inside the box and finding the far corner of the net. A reliable presence when Newcastle needed him. 7

Allan Saint-Maximin – It is a show of Newcastle’s strength that they can bring on Saint-Maximin with the game already won. Didn’t do anything particularly good or bad, but got minutes in his legs. 6

Jonjo Shelvey – Sat in the middle of the park and helped the visitors keep their shape as Southampton aimlessly passed it around for the remaining 20 minutes.

Elliot Andersen – N/A

Javier Manquillo – N/A
