Bournemouth put very real Premier League safety fears to one side with Carabao Cup thrashing of Everton

Bournemouth cast aside the growing concerns about their league form by progressing into the EFL Cup fourth round on the back of a comfortable win over Everton that will strengthen their belief they can stage a repeat when the two teams resume hostilities in the league on Saturday.

Gary O’Neil’s side were in control from the moment Jamal Lowe fired them ahead. Junior Stanislas added a second and Emiliano Marcondes and Jaidon Anthony completed the win after Demarai Gray’s reply.

After suffering painful back to back defeats in the league, Bournemouth were in desperate need of a lift. Ten days previously they had allowed a two-goal lead to slip away against Tottenham here and then on Saturday suffered a repeat when they squandered a 3-1 advantage at Leeds.

O’Neil made nine changes to the starting line-up at Elland Road and there was a clear sense his side were anxious to make amends for that loss when they made an energetic start to the game that immediately had the visitors on the back foot.

And the early pressure quickly told when Lowe made the seventh minute breakthrough. The Bournemouth forward was given time to advance into the Everton penalty area after collecting a pass from Stanislas then benefitted from a significant slice of good fortune when he shot struck the boot of James Garner and looped over keeper Asmir Begovic, who was left stranded.

Tom Davies had missed a clear chance to equalise after an excellent passing move involving Anthony Gordon, Neal Maupay and Abdoulaye Doucoure had opened up the home side. Davies had a clear sight of goal but succeeded only in lifting his shot over the bar.

And Gordon was similarly wasteful when he failed to find the target with a close range header after Yerry Mina had outjumped the home defence at the far post.

Everton were unable to sustain that positive spell. Lampard’s side needed an injection of energy at the start of the second half but instead they fell further behind when Mason Holgate slipped as he attempted to collect Begovic’s pass. Ryan Christie nipped in to deliver a low cross and when Begovic could only parry Lowe’s shot, Stanislas was on hand to finish.

Lampard reacted by making a triple change including the introduction of Gray but Bournemouth maintained their momentum and should have wrapped the game up in the 63rd minute when Lowe headed over from Zemura’s cross.

And shortly after Gray brought Everton back into the game in the 66th minute when he beat Mark Travers with an excellent curling finish but Marcondes ended the visitors hope of a comeback after Begovic had once again parried a Lowe shot.
