Tottenham 1-2 Liverpool (Kane 70’ | Salah 11’, 40’)
Mohamed Salah’s first-half double was enough to see Liverpool past a flighty Tottenham in north London on Sunday and end a rare two-game losing streak in the Premier League.
Salah fired home just 11 minutes in after neat work from Andrew Robertson and Darwin Nunez unlocked the Spurs defence with relative ease.
Eric Dier then gifted the Egyptian forward a second when his misdirected header fell straight to Liverpool’s deadly finisher, who delightfully clipped over Hugo Lloris.
Spurs hit back in the second half only when Dejan Kulusevski entered the fray – the Swede feeding through Harry Kane to fire home. But it was too little too late for Antonio Conte’s men, who couldn’t again break through a resolute Reds defence.
Here, i brings you the player ratings from north London…
Tottenham player ratings
Hugo Lloris – Denied Nunez early on and couldn’t do much about either Liverpool goal, but was also seemingly unwilling to try and get the ball moving fast from deep. 6
Emerson Royal – Run ragged by the high-playing Robertson all afternoon and couldn’t handle Darwin – or Alexander-Arnold – for most of the game. Didn’t benefit from Conte’s defensive formation. 5
Eric Dier – Made the blunder that led to Salah’s second – a worrying lapse of concentration Gareth Southgate would hope he’d be free of at this stage in his career. 5
Clement Lenglet – Should have done better for both of Liverpool’s goals but grew into the game, especially when Spurs were chasing late on. Headed a golden opportunity over the bar with 13 minutes left. 6
Ben Davies – Endured a quiet evening that largely consisted of holding his shape and distributing to Spurs’ midfield wherever possible. 6
Ryan Sessegnon – Hooked on 68 minutes after failing to offer any sort of attacking influence on the game. Had a quiet night. 6
Rodrigo Bentancur – Had problems getting the better of Thiago, so much so that Spurs generally went down their left when seeking to attack. 5
Yves Bissouma – Had no real response to Fabinho’s marshalling of the central midfield until later in the game when Liverpool began to sit further back. Didn’t shine, didn’t disappoint. 6
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – Fresh off his heroics in midweek, Hojbjerg tried to get Spurs going in midfield but ended up playing sideways for most of the game. A frustrating afternoon. 6
Harry Kane – Linked up well with Perisic on a couple of occasions but Liverpool’s defence generally had the reading of him. Kane looked perhaps a little leggy, yet still possessed the impact to finish from Kulusevski. 7
Ivan Perisic – Probably the most threatening Spurs player on the night, but that isn’t really saying much. Hit the post in the first half and didn’t get any closer all evening. 7
Subs:
Dejan Kulusevski – Assisted Kane with Spurs’ goal two minutes after entering the field. He gave the hosts the impetus they needed to make a game of it when all seemed lost. 8
Matt Doherty – Something had to change in the second half for Spurs and Doherty replacing Emerson gave them better balance. 7
Lucas Moura – N/A
Liverpool player ratings
Alisson – Had very little to do on an evening were Liverpool’s defence had the better of a weakened Spurs forward line. 7
Trent Alexander-Arnold – His glorious distribution to Nunez in the first half will be clipped and slapped on Youtube before the night is out. Alexander-Arnold had one of his better outings in recent weeks and held his shape reasonably well until right at the end, and struggled at times against Perisic. 6
Ibrahima Konate – A composed performance in the centre of defence, something that Liverpool have lacked over the past few Premier League weekends. Joined forces with Van Dijk to keep Kane quiet. 7
Virgil van Dijk – Likewise, had little trouble matching up against Kane and Perisic, and linked well with Fabinho in front of him to snuff out many a Spurs attack. 7
Andrew Robertson – Quick out the blocks and was looking to get balls in to Nunez, behind Emerson, all evening. Robertson offered plenty of options going forward and wasn’t really fazed by Bentancur. 8
Fabinho – Had the better of Bissouma and seemed to enjoy sitting in the centre mopping up stray balls that were never going to reach Kane. Combative and creative in equal measures, Fabinho perhaps benefited from Conte’s tactical decision making. 8
Harvey Elliott – Enthusiastic on the ball, Elliott played with one eye looking over his shoulder to ensure Alexander-Arnold was covered. Didn’t stop feeding Salah all evening. 8
Thiago Alcantara – Liverpool could have controlled this game even without Thiago present. His inclusion was something of a luxury for Klopp and he helped grind the game down with the Reds leading into the second half. 7
Roberto Firmino – Endured a quiet afternoon playing in the pocket behind Salah and Nunez. Liverpool did best when going wide and Firmino was left isolated at times. 6
Mohamed Salah – Scored his first with an impactful finish and was then gifted a second before the break. Salah was always a threat but his influence faded in the second half as Spurs took control of the flow. 8
Darwin Nunez – Had a beauty of a shot saved and saw another sail wide early in the first half. Calmly assisted Salah for his opener and linked up well with Robertson. A cooler head and he could have scored himself. 7
Subs:
Jordan Henderson – Came on for Elliott as Klopp sought to shore up the midfield and did just that. 6
Curtis Jones – Replaced Firmino to try and swing the momentum back in Liverpool’s favour. Had to figure out how to team up with Alexander-Arnold to take on Lenglet and Perisic. 6
Joe Gomez – N/A
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – N/A
