Man Utd legend Gary Neville has lambasted Red Devils captain Bruno Fernandes for his behaviour and lack of effort in the second half of the club’s 7-0 defeat to Liverpool.
Fernandes appeared to almost give up as Liverpool put six second-half goals past United, constantly complaining and asking to be taken off by boss Erik ten Hag with the score at 6-0.
He also shoved the assistant referee Paul Adcock in his anger, as well as clearly feigning injury after a clash with Ibrahima Konate, which led Neville to say, “That’s embarrassing from Fernandes. It’s on his chest and he goes down. He’s so frustrating at times.”
Neville then continued to criticise the Portuguese midfielder after the game, saying: “The second half has been an absolute disgrace, a shambles.
“They have not been epitomised more than Bruno Fernandes, who has been embarrassing – a shambles – in this game.
“Fernandes is stood in the centre circle with his arms raised saying ‘Why isn’t it me coming off?’ I think some of his behaviour in the second half has been a disgrace.”
Meanwhile, former United captain Roy Keane said: “The senior players were embarrassing, didn’t show any leadership skills. The goals they gave away were shocking. A tough day for United.
“Thank god I’ve never been part of a team that’s been beaten by that much playing for Man United.
“The players will be embarrassed, ashamed of their performance. When the going got tough they went missing.”
Keane was also critical of Fernandes in particular and said: “Fernandes’ body language today was dreadful. A really talented lad, but is body language, waving his arms, not running back, you wouldn’t have been happy with him in your dressing room.”
Speaking after the game, Fernandes admitted that the second half was not good enough from United.
He said: “It’s a really bad result. The first half was really good from ourselves, but obviously the second half was not at our level. We gave too much space to them. We have to get back, we know how good we are. We know this team can do really good things.”
