Liverpool 7-0 Man Utd (Gakpo 43′, 50′, Nunez 47′, 76′, Salah 66′, 83′, Firmino 89′)
Liverpool recorded their best-ever result against Manchester United with a 7-0 hammering at Anfield, as Jurgen Klopp’s side had an evening to remember.
Mohamed Salah’s brace took him to the top of Liverpool’s list of all-time top-scorers in the Premier League, ahead of Robbie Fowler.
Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo also scored twice apiece, while Roberto Firmino, who confirmed that he will leave the club at the end of his contract in the summer, added a late seventh.
Here’s how every player rated out of 10 on a dream day for Liverpool and a nightmarish one for United:
Liverpool player ratings
Alisson – Distribution from the Brazilian was excellent as per usual and was rarely tested by United attackers in the first half. Started the move that led to Liverpool’s opener and was only caught on a couple of moments but an otherwise comfortable evening between the sticks. 8
Trent Alexander Arnold – Defensively found lacking on a couple of occasions but otherwise did well going forward in supporting Liverpool’s wide forwards with his passing and carrying. He was involved in a lot of the positive moves going forward. 9
Virgil van Dijk – Looked a lot better protected alongside Konate and did well to keep pace with Rashford in the first half. Much like Konate, he was threatened rarely in the second half as United’s attackers went quiet after Liverpool’s goals. 8
Ibrahima Konate – The Frenchman’s aggression helped Liverpool maintain an effective high-line and kept Weghorst’s involvement in the final third to a minimum. Had little to do in the second half. 8
Andy Robertson – At his intelligent best in the first half and troubled United’s right on the overlap consistently. Did well to find Gakpo in behind for the opener. 9
Harvey Elliott – The teenager was busy off the ball helping Liverpool’s counter-press work exceedingly well and in doing so, keeping the pressure on United. Followed up with an excellent outing in the second half as well, getting his reward with an assist for his tireless work. 9
Fabinho – The Brazil international conceded a few sloppy fouls and saw yellow close to half time for a foul on Rashford. Did a lot better in the second half in the middle and formed a solid base alongside Henderson. 8
Jordan Henderson – At his industrious best throughout the game and kick-started some of Liverpool’s best moves leading to goals in the game, gave Robertson a great deal of support down the left. 8
Mohamed Salah – Turned the clocks back to two years ago, Salah was at the peak of his powers on the right, scoring both his goals in clinical fashion and did extremely well one vs one against Martinez to set up Gakpo’s second. His brace made him Liverpool’s all-time top Premier League goalscorer. 10
Cody Gakpo – If Gakpo’s role in this side is to be the next Roberto Firmino for Liverpool, then this game was the best example, the Netherlands international was efficient with his chance and effective in his work off the ball. The understanding between him, Nunez and Salah seems to be improving with each passing week. 9
Darwin Nunez – The Uruguay international was contained well by Dalot in the first half but showed his striker-like instincts in the second half to bully the United defence to score his brace. 9
Subs:
Milner: Came on late in the game as part of several changes by Klopp. 7
Bajcetic: Kept the ball ticking nicely after coming on, helping Liverpool keep United on the backfoot in their search for goals. 7
Jota: Had a good chance at the end to put further misery on United and looked bright in a brief cameo. 7
Firmino: Firmino’s goal was the icing on the cake of a brilliant evening of football at Anfield, the celebration matched the significance of his contributions to the club as well. 7
Man Utd player ratings
David De Gea – Had a night to forget and was not helped with a poor display from the defence in front of him. 4
Diogo Dalot – The only silver lining for Erik ten Hag in an otherwise disastrous display from his side, did his best to contain Nunez in the first half but was powerless once Liverpool stepped up a gear in the second. 6
Raphael Varane – At fault for the first goal by Liverpool, did poorly one vs one against Gakpo and was punished for it. His fortunes did not improve in the second half with Nunez and Salah terrorizing him and Martinez all half. 3
Lisandro Martinez – By far his poorest display in Manchester United colours, after a positive first half, his form spiralled in the second and could do nothing against an imperious Salah, taken off late in the game for Malacia. 3
Luke Shaw – Followed up an encouraging display in the first half with a dismal display in the second and defensively just not good enough in deeper areas and looked absolutely powerless against the might of Liverpool’s attack. 3
Fred – Looked all over the place throughout the match and never got into the game, taken off in the second half for McTominay. 3
Casemiro – Settled into the first half better an initial nervy spell. In the second half, he struggled against Liverpool’s powerful counter-press and could do little to prevent the goals that came. 3
Antony – Worked hard off the ball for United but was poor with his delivery of crosses in the first half, and was far too easy for Liverpool to keep quiet. 3
Bruno Fernandes – Started the game on the left flank to keep tabs on Trent Alexander Arnold and did not do as good of a job. Failed to inspire any sort of comeback in the second half and had an evening to forget where he was lucky to escape without a card. “Bruno Fernandes has been embarrassing at times,” said Gary Neville on commentary. 2
Marcus Rashford – Struggled to find space in behind playing up top ahead of Weghorst but also did not do as well with a clear chance set up by Shaw for him. Not his best evening in a United shirt, especially poor in the context of his recent performances. 5
Wout Weghorst – Looked a little clunky on the ball but saw his involvement improve as the half went on. Got taken off early in the second half. 4
Subs:
Malacia: Came on too late in the game to limit any damage. 3
Sabitzer: N/A
Elanga: N/A
McTominay: Replaced Fred in the second half but could do little to improve United’s control of the game. 3
Garnacho: Hardly looked the threatening the winger that he has always looked coming off the bench and was largely kept quiet by Konate and Van Dijk. 4
