Newcastle United transfer news: Club hopeful of having Kieran Trippier available for next match

Newcastle United hope to conclude a deal for England and Atletico Madrid defender Kieran Trippier in time to integrate him into the squad before they play Watford in mid-January.

The deal is not finalised yet and Newcastle will need to improve on their initial offer to bring the player to St James’ Park – but i understands there is optimism that months of preparatory work will bear fruit for the new owners. If they can come to an agreement on a fee a deal could be signed off as early as the end of this week.

Trippier has been sounded out about a move and reacted positively to the prospect of joining a team in the thick of a relegation fight but negotiations around potential release clauses still need to be ironed out.

The defender started for Atletico Madrid against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday in a sign that the initial offer will need to be improved. But his club are keen to extract a premium valuation from a player who is reaching the end of his contract and wants to return to England before next winter’s World Cup.

His first preference in the summer was to join Manchester United but a move did not materialise and they will not be revisiting their interest. Chelsea have also been credited with an interest but there has been no contact so far and the path is clear for Newcastle to conclude a deal.

Simeone confirmed Trippier could leave – reluctantly – at his pre-match press conference: “We have always had to live with these situations; important and very good players within the team who have possibilities of leaving.

“Then it will depend on what the footballer himself wants. Consequently, we will try to follow what is happening and look for solutions.

“He is an important player for our team and we coaches can’t do too much in terms of players’ decisions, we can only tell Trippier how important he is for the team.”

Newcastle United’s owners wanted to be quick out of blocks in January and tabled an offer within hours of the transfer window opening for Trippier, one of their top targets.

i understands they are also working on a second deal which they hope can be concluded swiftly too. The club want as many as six arrivals this month, and the loan market will be utilised.

Former Celtic and Reading director of football Nick Hammond has been drafted in to advise on negotiations and evaluate potential deals.

It’s understood there has been contact between United and Lille’s owners over Sven Botman, the £30million-rated defender. Newcastle have funds available this month but their new-look executive team, which comprises of Amanda Staveley and her husband Mehrdad Ghodoussi as well as co-owner Jamie Reuben, are telling agents that any deals done must represent value for money.

Hammond can expect a busy month. It tells its own story that agents and intermediaries have been contacting the club to offer players in the first few days of the window.

A link with Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang that emerged on Sunday appears unlikely to materialise but it is a sign of the circles they are now moving in that such a deal doesn’t merit immediate derision.
