Euro 2022 fixtures: How to watch weekend’s games, what they mean for England and the players to look out for

England will find out their quarter-final opponents on Saturday, but know the road to Wembley is in their own hands with both potential opponents Denmark and Spain having been swatted aside by Germany.

The Lionesses’ status as group winners means they face the runners-up of Group B, which wraps up on Saturday.

In Sunday’s action, Netherlands will hope to clinch top spot in Group C against Switzerland before Sweden face Portugal.

That group is unusual in that all four teams are still able to qualify, despite having looked like one of the most ominous pots.

Denmark vs Spain

The winner will face England next, but both will not be looking back at the group stages with any real fondness. Spain began with a 4-1 victory over Finland, but even that exposed some serious defensive frailties that were then exploited by Germany.

Predictably, Pernille Harder has been the brightest note of Denmark’s first two games and she will be eager for a fast start against a defence that has conceded in the first three minutes in both their games so far.

Finland vs Germany

Saturday 16 July, 8pm – BBC Four, BBC iPlayer, BBC Sport website

Finland will rue the extent to which Covid has affected their hopes at this tournament, with Tottenham goalkeeper Tinja-Riikka Korpela the biggest miss against Germany after some impressive performances so far.

In truth, it is likely to have been academic in this group of death. Germany were perhaps not taken seriously enough beforehand – and especially when star forward Lea Schuller was ruled out through Covid – but in fact they have looked like the team to beat.

Switzerland vs Netherlands

Sunday 17 July, 5pm – BBC Two, BBC iPlayer, BBC Sport website

Netherlands will be without Vivianne Miedema but they do have Manchester United midfielder Jackie Groenen back as she has now recorded a negative Covid test. Goalkeeper and captain Sari van Veenendaal remains out with a shoulder injury and will play no further part in this tournament.

Both these sides have squandered a two-goal lead against Portugal, though Danielle van de Donk spared Dutch blushes with a sensational strike that has put Netherlands in prime position going into the final round of matches.

Sweden vs Portugal

Saturday 16 July, 5pm – BBC iPlayer, BBC Sport website

Sweden were thought to be one of the main contenders at these Euros; that may yet prove to be the case, but they have not blown anyone away just yet.

Portugal, on the other hand, have defied expectations, largely thanks to attacking duo Jessica Silva and Diana Silva. They were a last-minute addition to the group but with 90 minutes to go, they still have a chance of escaping it. That in itself is a serious achievement from Francisco Neto’s side.
