Brentford have no intention of selling in-demand front man Ivan Toney, who has been linked with Leeds, Newcastle, West Ham and Manchester United.
i understands there have been no offers yet for Toney, who scored 12 goals from 33 games in his first full season leading the line in the Premier League. And with the player under contract for another three years, it would surely take only astronomical offers close to the £40million mark to make the Bees re-consider.
Having signed Aaron Hickey and England under-21 forward Keane Lewis-Potter, Brentford – who suffered the blow of number one target Christian Eriksen opting for Manchester United – are nevertheless looking to build on last season’s mid-table Premier League finish.
Toney is one of a number of strikers just below the top tier of established internationals who have had huge price tags applied to them this summer. There was a feeling that Everton could be tempted to sell Dominic Calvert-Lewin but it is understood that the club would be seeking a similar £60m fee to the which Richarlison commanded as he moved to Spurs.
With Everton also issuing a hands-off warning to suitors on Anthony Gordon, the market for attacking reinforcements is proving fiendishly difficult for aspirational clubs like Newcastle and West Ham.
It doesn’t help that a few clubs are interested in a similar pool of players.
The Hammers, for instance, hope to clinch a move for Armando Broja and have offered close to £30m – but Chelsea favour a loan move, which could open the door for Newcastle. Everton are also keen on the player but the extent of their budget is unclear. They have an active interest in Burnley’s Maxwel Cornet, who is set to become the latest player to leave Turf Moor following relegation.
At St James’ Park there is a mounting frustration at the sort of prices being quoted for priority targets like Moussa Diaby, the Bayer Leverkusen winger. The France international is rated at £60m and Newcastle are coming to the point in their close season where they must decide whether to push the boat out to secure critical targets before the season starts or hold fire and box smart in the latter stages of the transfer window.
It doesn’t help that the club are pitching for players with multiple options. Hugo Ekitike’s lukewarm response to Newcastle’s approach was disappointing; the player earned his “dream move” to Paris Saint Germain, signing a season-long loan with an option to buy over the weekend.
Newcastle, who do not want to start the season relying solely on Callum Wilson to shoulder the scoring burden, may look to structure similar deals.
Eddie Howe said: “I think the transfer market in general is very difficult. To sign top quality players – which is the area that we’re in now – is very difficult to do because you need a club willing to sell, you need the player to want to come to your club and there’s lots of things that go into making that happen.”
Some recruitment sources believe Sassuolo forward Gianluca Scamacca will emerge as a target for Premier League clubs. He scored 16 times in Serie A last season and is priced around £30million.
