When is the Euro 2022 final? Date, kick-off time, TV channel and who England Women could end up playing

Good teams can reach semi-finals, but only great teams win trophies. That is Fran Kirby’s message ahead of England’s Euro 2022 semi-final against Sweden as the Lionesses hope to break their last-four curse.

Under Sarina Wiegman’s two permanent predecessors Mark Sampson and Phil Neville, England reached two World Cup semi-finals and a Euros semi-final, but have not made it to the final of a major tournament since 2009, when they were beaten heavily by Germany.

“To be classified as a good team you don’t have to win a trophy,” Kirby said.

“We know what our ambitions are as a team and that is to win the tournament. I don’t want to be another player who loses in a semi-final and doesn’t get to the final of a major tournament with England.”

The European Championship is now into its final week and England are determined that they do not join the growing list of nations who failed to live up to expectations.

Norway were tipped as dark horses, only to suffer a record-breaking 8-0 defeat to the hosts and crash out at the group stages. Spain dominated for long periods in their quarter-final against England, but were deflated by Ella Toone’s late equaliser and were beaten by Georgia Stanway’s winner in extra time.

Defending champions Netherlands did not make it past the quarters amidst rumours of player dissent against manager Mark Parsons, Denmark failed to harness the power of Pernille Harder, and a supposedly up-and-coming Italy outfit took one point from their three games.
